Wet Two (Seacam) observations

  1. The Nexus wet-lens is not a very powerful diopter, however it's good at what it does, for the cost. It's not an achromat diopter, so will show more CA that the more expensive achromat diopters.

The Macromate and the Seacam Wet One and Wet Two are in a totally different league to the Nexus wet-lens, and the pricing difference (and performance) reflects this.

I brought one of each on my Bali trip as it was primarily a macro area, so have some experience using the two.

  2. If you have a port that will hold one of the lens diopters you already own, by all means try using them on a few dives to see if diopters uw even appeal to you.  If so, you might THEN find that being able to decide DURING a dive whether to use a diopter or not gives a wet diopter more overall utility.

Thanks for the info; I think my options with my current Ike setup are limited. Anyone have experience with wet or dry diopters for the Nikon 60/105 in Ikelite ports?

    All the best,

    Chris

  3. Does woody's diopter fit the 60/105mm subal ports?

Cor, yes, the Woody's fits both ports.

  4. James,

I thought that CA was usually associated with wide angle lenses, or in some cases micro lenses where the light is coming from behind the subject.

If that is the case then I don't see a problem using the Woody Diopter, there is no reason to solve a problem that doesn't exist by throwing $$$ at it.

I have never seen any CA in macro shots that I took.

As I recall Woody's Diopter provides the same improvement as does the one of the Seacam's and the macro mate.

Granted its not two pieces of glass glued together but it works very well, stays mounted on the port, is very

portable and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg

  5. I've been using a Woody's diopter since 1999, back in the old tech days of film to as recently as 2 weeks ago. I've made blow ups of images upwards of 20x30 with shots having the diopter on. There is no CA visible on those shots.

CA is more visible in Wide Angle back lit scenes, and easily corrected in PS.

  6. CA occurs when light is bent while passing through a medium. It's a factor for all lenses, not just wideangles. When light is bent passing through a strong diopter, it undergoes CA, that's why I recommend using the weakest diopter you can get away with when using a diopter with a WA and dome port.

For macro lenses, a diopter introduces CA, but if the diopter is weak, like w/ a Nexus, then the CA is minimal. Achromat diopters have multiple elements, and as the light is bent and CA's passing through the first element, it's corrected when it passes through the second.

This concludes my public service announcement...:-)

    Cheers

    James
