As larsdennert pointed out,
I found that my FX1 worked much better after a break-in period. I used to use cheap TDK tapes from Costco (which worked great in my TRV-900) and had a few dropouts and some strange artifacting early on with my FX1. After about a month the problems almost stopped, but I have switched to Sony DVM63HD tapes (after cleaning the heads), and I've used 30 tapes without a single problem. I think the "no mixing of brands' taboo" is still quite valid according to all the video forums that I've seen. I'm getting the DVM63HD tapes online for about $10, so it's a no-brainer for me to always use these.Seems that the heads wear in and the drops become fewer.
I have a bunch (19) Panasonic DVM63 with one pass on them. If anyone wants them.

Hi Shasta man
The panasonics I use are the PQ pro quality ones, Like.
I gone though couple hundred of them over the years.
Thanks Wagsy.
Such a difference in cost to the Sony tapes. Even the highest quality are still under the standard Sony HD tape.
Well I don't know about the taboo. But everyone likes to err on the side of caution. Sorta like the earth was flat until someone else said it was round. ![]()
Shasta, the AMQ are more expensive and I've noticed no dropouts shooting from the A1 or the Canon HD1 in HDV. They are great tapes and great value. I also intermix with Sony on occasion. No detrimental effects yet. And I shoot about 2 hrs a week now on the cameras.
I have a few boxes of Sony DVM60PRL (Premium). What's the bottom line? Will they work in a FX1? Will there be a known loss in quality by using these?
Just about any tape will work. The issue is dropouts, recording head wear, etc. I have found my std pana and sony tapes are more prone to drop and lose the the time code than the HD63s. They have performed flawlessly.

Thanks for the reply Shawn.
Ok, so if I'm understanding the previous comments in the thread, I can use these tapes I've got to "mess around" with. But, when I go to shoot "golden moments", I should shoot with the better quality HP tapes (Sony HD in my case) for best insurance of quality. The premise here being that there should be no issue of switching tape types with the tape head because they are from the same manufacturer; Sony in this case. Correct?
That is how i have been working it.
