I have always used the power control knob a lot on my YS90 strobe to adjust exposure. Most of my diving is in cold UK water and it always irritates me how bloody small this control knob is. A lot of the time I land up pushing the strobe arms out of alignment when wanting to adjust this knob.
Other strobes such as Inon and Subtronic look to have knobs just as small and difficult to adjust with thick gloves on. Perhaps there are other strobes I should look at.
Is it just me or would others like to see better designed strobes regarding this most important of control knobs?
I have always had a sneaking suspicion that designers and draftsmen have spindly little fingers from pushing pencils too long, hence the small knobs.
At least the Ikelite Sunstrobe/DS200 has a decent set of dials a fellow can get a grip on easily. I am waiting to try the strobes with gloves on. Shouldn’t be too long as we’ve had the warmest winter on record up here in Canada.
I agree with Paul. I've tried a dozen or so strobes from different manufacturers, and the one that was easiest to adjust when using gloves was the SS200 (haven't tried the new digital version, but the dials seem to be the same).
The knobs on the Ikelite DS-125 are also nice and big.
I raise similar questions about using non-ikelite tray and stubby little handles, especially on the dSLR housings. Our taller handle adds that much more dimension to strobe arms, is adequate for those who must wear gloves, and the tray allows opening of housing lid snaps without removal of the tray............
HI
Good old SB-105 are easy to use in the cold uk waters.. even with my dry gloves on.

Agreed Ike, but it should be made from aluminum or somehow made much lighter. I do like the dial on the manual controller with gloves on, btw.
Jack
It IS aluminum. Does not need the lead insert we supply unless housing is used without a strobe...........
Regarding the small dial on the S&S strobes, I have a YS 90DX and often dive the chilly waters of Monterey. I found that putting a zip tie around the dial and leaving a big enough tail on it to grab was a cheap work around.

Now that's a neat little idea - I'll have to try that. I've got loads of zip ties (or cable ties as they are called in the UK)
