Remote u/w video system

  1. (A question for a friend)

For some research project (that I know nothing about) need to put video system under water for long time. Better with power supply from outside.

The system will be constant in one place.

    Any information will help.

Is there a way to trigger the camera by some sensor?

  2. There are a few makers of remote monitors. The most famous is of course the LMI one. You would have to make a seperate source for power to the camera with a modified power cable. However if you get a FP970 battery, it can last up to 6 hours and longer than any tape available. Unless you want to upload direct from firewire.

What is a "long time" hours? days? weeks? If it's anything past hours, I'd suggest going with a CCD camera, not a video camera. You can get a good color CCD security system type camera reasonably, the better ones have a matrix that can be used to "trigger" the camera when it senses motion in any or all of up to about 32 different areas on the screen.

Some of them, notably the Sony's also take power via the same coax cable they send their signal on so if you're planning to do something in a remote tank or close offshore, you only need one armoured cable - all the electronics and the power supply stay onshore. Not sure about the max range of such a system, the system we installed years ago had at least some 1500' or so cable runs and worked fine.

Google closed-circuit security system suppliers for the hardware. I think any sort of housing would have to be a custom one-off designed to hold the electronics. Good thing about it is that it doesn't need to be too streamlined since it's in a fixed location.

With a broadband surface connection, you could even stream the video over the internet to any location desired if you added a PC with a video capture card. Of course you'd have to have a place to house all the electronics close to the camera.

You could also contact Caribbean Webcams, they did the Underwater Bonaire webcam among others, so have experience in this sort of thing. http://www.caribbeanwebcams.com/

  4. Thanks a lot both of you.

As I wrote I don't really know for what is that system, I only got a very short description without many details.

I'll forward that data, Hope it will help them.

  5. Send me your details and I could draw up some designs. I can also mill out the parts.

  6. I have several hundred feet of very high end underwater cable that I was told was used by Howard Hall for one of his productions for his underwater lighting. I have no need for it so if you could use it, you're welcome to it. It is too big and heavy to put into any kind of box so you'd have to figure out a way to get it. I am in San Diego. At any rate, its free. Or I can trade it for a date with Pam Anderson.
