The Mac does Windoze XP

  1. Apple has finally made public the beta software that allows Intel Mac owners to run Windoze XP. What does this mean? Well nothing really. It's just a bit weird to see Windoze on my mac that's not VPC based.

Bootcamp - Windoze for Mac Machines

  2. Windoze on an Apple machine? The mother of all sins!! :)

  3. Ha

next nikon will make all their stuff fit Canon .. and they HEY PC Canon shooters win !

  4. So, does it work both ways. Is Apple currently or going to sell a version of their OS that will work on Non-Mac branded computer's.

  5. Why? That's like going back to an eight track after using CDs/Ipods.

Very much doubt that Mac OS will be made avalible for non Mac machines. Mac had their clone wars and it almost ended the company.

  6. I think it makes lots of sense and dollors for apple to sell an OS for plain old PC hardware if it does not cause too many technical or compatibility problems. If they can get just a small percentage of the 96% of the computer users they're not currently selling to to bite, at ~$150 a copy, they'll more than double the profits of the company overnight.

  7. I think Apple is rather interested in selling computers so they will ensure that the OS will not work on a generic Intel machine. Since some software is only made for 'doze, this is great news for Mac heads like me (now 21 year user!). :)

I have been told (by a friend who works with Macs) that this can already be done - he has seen the Mac OS running on a PC. However there are many limitations and many people I know can't see Apple wanting to go down this route - in fact some Mac-ish sites are rumouring moves by Apple to counter attempts to modify their OS to allow it to run on PCs. That said - at least one graphic design comany boss I know was astounded at Apple's announcement! He was convinced it was an April Fool until he read the date! He was downloading the beta last I heard and it has high potential - some printer drivers, rips and the like don't run on Macs, so the ability to use a Mac to run XP has immediate and real advantages.

If they are as good at building hardware as Dell and HP then there's no problem in having the Mac OS run on these. If they are not, they're better off letting the others build the hardware and concentrate on the things they do well.

The Mac currently has under 5% market share. It won't take a high percentage of converts to offset the profits they may give up in hardware.

If they do sell an OS that works on my PC for $150, I'd probably buy one to find out which I like better.

  10. Herb are you kidding me? Apple Industrial Design is number 1 in the computer business. Form factor alone is the money. The Apple machines have better ergonomics and materials and overall design to look cool too.

And yes, OS X has been ported to PC. But very limited in drivers etc. Apple has already put in software updates to prevent further porting. Still at $68 a share... I'm not complaining!

Dru, my pervious post should be read at face value. There's nothing between the lines. I don't have an opinion on who's hardware is better. If their hardward is better then it won't hurt them to have their OS run on Dell's and HP's. They'll just make more money on software sales.

I think the issue is compatibility. Having limited drivers as you said is a compatibility issue. It would damage their reputation if they sell an OS that does not work well with all the current hardware. So we may not see it for that reason.

The stock is up over 10% since the announcement. Somebody likes the idea of Mac's running XP.

  12. Herb What I was saying is that Apple makes more money on hardware. The OS is just an integral part of the entire system. It's really why it works better than having OS separate from machine. It limits what is out there but then again the product is better (except that POS titanium powerbook... now that was a case of good design, bad materials!)

Apple has better software and ~4% market share. Perhaps it's time to rethink that strategy.

  14. It's like BMW vs GM... I prefer BMW.

  15. I had the impression that this would be an emulating thing, but no! It will run natively and you can choose what OS to start up the computer with. That's what used to happen when OS X was first introduced, you could choose between OS X or OS 9, now they dropped native support for OS 9 and add it for windoze. Interesting move...
