Warning - New Micro Nikkor 105 2.8 AFS VR

I just got the new Nikon Micro Nikkor 105 2.8 AFS VR in my hand, its a fat lens.......... I mean FAT LENS !!!!!

It will not fit the Subal housing and extension rings.

The VR, focus limit and AF/M buttons is so big that you cannot put an extension ring or a port on the housing. I have tried this on my Subal N10 (f100 housing) that we run F100, D70, and D200 in. Yes you read it correct, all cameras have been in this housing underwater

Before ordering measure your housing and ports, I'm not sure about other housing manufactures.

Solution:

Make the internal port diameter bigger 1-2 mm total is needed. The ports have to much plastic in them anyway (I least thats my opinion, so try at your own risk)

1. Professional way. Get someone to put your extension ring in a router and cut away 1 mm of plastic, gives 2 mm total.

2. Easy way : Use the Dremmel to sand away some plastic and it will exactly fit.

The lens: Good fast and quiet AF , VR not tested yet maybe during eastern depending on the ICE. Focuses to minimum focusing distance with the Nikon 1.7 teleconverter so thats good.

Thanks, I missed those treads as the title was "105 AF-S VR; worth it? ".

Now hopefully no one else will miss it, and I will try to get some machining done tomorrow.

Interesting, I thought it worked on any Subal housing with the FP-120. What makes the ND2 different? Is there an easy way to modify the others to accept the new 105?

Also the lens I tried didn't work in my ND2 housing. Although Dave made the point that it is easier/possible to mount by pushing it in from the back, while holding out the zoom/MF gear. Which I am yet to try because of course I have not bought this lens.

I have not tried this on the ND2, but the "other Dave" has obviously got this working. On the ND20 I was able to mount the lens on the body in the housing, but I was unable to mount the FP-120 port onto the housing.

Has anybody talked with Ike yet about getting a port for this lens?

i don't want to bug him if someone has.

Anders, can you share the secret of getting the D200 & D70 into the Subal F100 housing?

My F100 housing is currently a paper weight, whilst I wait for delivery of my D200 housing from Sea Optics here in Australia. It would be nice to try out the camera in the F100 housing.....

The lens does mount on the Subal D2X housing with the 120 mm FP

You have to gently pull out the manual focus gear knob. It is on a spring system that allows you to do this. The lens fits through the housing port open and into the FP 120 easily. Though the clearance is a bit tight. It is very easy to knock the MA/M focus switch on the lens to MF. I suggest a small piece of tape over the switch to prevent this. The manual focus gear come to rest against the lens directly behind the MA/M focus switch. It does not however push hard enough to leave any scratches on the lens.

I managed to get the lens in by using the TC17 closest to tha camera.

Autofocus works with this teleconverter.

Using rings 40 + 66 + Special macroport for Inon quad flash. Will test this setup during eastern as all machine shops are closed for the hollidays.

So this will give me 1.7:1 + digital crop = 2.55:1 . And if I'm adding the Inon wetlens (gives 1.4) i will have 3.57:1

So now I just have to find small stuff :-)

Crop affects field of view, but not magnification.

Thats totally correct, but in practice you feel the "virtual magnification" as you get 1:1 on the small sensor.

But when you use the image printed or on the screen side to side by a scanned uncropped "full frame" slide you get the "virtual magnification" wheather you want it or not.

Machining of subal extension rings.

"Don't try this at home kids!!!" :-)

I machined away 1mm of the port material, which makes the hole 87mm instead of the standard Subal 85mm. No problems with the bayonet plenty of plastic left to securely hold the ports.

It was very easy to machine in the plastic, so we did 5 extension rings in 20 minutes.

So now the 105mm fits without converter !!!

Now if you just tell me where to find a machine like that... Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Matt, anything other than the usual dremel and drill are too much to me!

Most any town should have a local tool making shop that should have such a lathe.

The lens fits through the port opening on the D2X housing just fine. What you have to get around is the focusing gear. Fortunately this gear is on a shaft with a spring so it pulls out so you can mount the camera and lens in the housing. I have shot this lens on three one day trips. It does work on the Subal D2X housing without modification.
