camera specific settings tips : Canon G2

  1. Hi All.

Just thought I'd get down the camera settings I've been using with the G2, underwater, in an ike housing, with their ds50 strobe and digital slave. For a few points, I've put down reasons. I'd love to discuss this with others. And, in fact, most of these are directly applicable to any camera.

    Don

    G2 modes & setting:

    shooting menu:

file format - raw - best quality, very little overhead, digital negative

    ISO 50 - lowest noise

    dig zoom off

autofocus continuous mode - prevents lcd freeze! Very important when trying to frame moving things using the LCD

    evaluative metering

    spot metering in center

    cont mode low speed

review 2 seconds - you can always half press shutter to escape review mode or press set, to hold the review longer

trick - take a shot, press set during the review, now press display, until histogram is shown. Now, every shot, will show histogram.

    contrast normal

sharpness low - do sharpening as final step of image preparation

    saturation normal

    shooting utility menu:

    beep off

    lcd brightness high

auto power down - turn off during dive - lcd still blanks after a few minutes idle, to save battery, but camera wakes up quicker.

    playback utility menu:

playback sound off - turns off power up jingle

    Shooting controls:

    Go into record mode

push the display button twice, until shooting data shown on lcd

Av (aperture priority mode) - gives me control over DOF and control over aperture to ensure it is in the right general range for strobe to subject distance. The G2 Av mode, with flash, works like the Nikon SLR's A mode, where it limits the slowest shutter speed to some reasonable value, and just lets the strobe take over, if there is no enough light.

    flash forced on, no red-eye

    Auto White Balance

    Rarely any exposure compensation

    Sometimes negative flash compensation

Auto Focus, and in and out of "macro" mode, as needed.

  2. Wow Thanks Don! And I was just fixin to write you and ask how you set yours up.

    ;)

  3. Don or other G2 users,

Anyone know of any site that or reference that gives a comparison of the DOF at various apertures of the G2 to a comparable 35mm film EOS.

I am hearing wildly different numbers as to how much more dof the G2 has at the same number, and being a long time film shooter, I can judge by feel when I need f4, 8, or 11.

    Thanks

    Bob

  4. Check out this thread. It has a pointer to a site with a formula and conclusions.

It's probably easiest to shoot some with a ruler pointing away, and get used to it that way...
