And you all thought I was in Singapore for the week...

Soon I will unleash my version of 'Big red' onto the world made out of cereal boxes and gaffer tape.

RISE 'BIG BOY' the ultimate underwater camera. Although slightly camp it will send shock waves through the filming community...

Sorry, the twelve and a half hour flight is taking its toll.

    Dive safe

  4. OT perhaps?

Nah - just the business that you need to be in to be able to afford some of this stuff..........

  5. I had the opportunity to have a closeup inspection and rundown of this camera by one of the development team from RED.

After some discussion about the needs of underwater film makers we calculated the entry cost into this camera to be approx $32,500 USD - of course this does not include the cost of the housing or various ports.

Included among the must have accessories are a LCD monitor , 18-50 lens , viewfinder , 320gig harddrive, and nikon 35mm lens mount.

  6. There was a showing of the RED footage in Sydney on Fri night, it blew everyone away!!!!!

  7. Can't wait........I'm #954 in line. Expecting delivery by end December. Sold my soul to the man in the RED suit!!

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  8. Mark ,

How are you going to cofigure yours ?

  9. For housings, lenses etc I'm not sure yet. I'm planning to start off with a macro configuration and concentrate on that for the first year or so. Depending on what Gates come up with I may take that route. I've got the 360 gig HDD, and a couple of batteries, the LCD and the PL mount ordered. Lens wise I'm looking potentially at the Tamron 90mm having been steered on to that by some macro specialists who do a lot of stuff for the Beeb. I'll keep you all updated as things go on.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  10. Sorry for the ignorance fellas, but can you use Nikon lenses on this beast with some home made gears for focus?

If so, can you use DX lenses?

  11. You can get optional lens mounts for both Nikon & Canon 35mm mounts - my understanding is that DX lenses are not compatable.

  12. Cool, sounds like an impressive system.

Mark - how will you insure it!? Do you use divemaster in the UK? Going to be a big yearly bill!

  13. I'm looking to go through a U.S based filming industry insurance company. Whichever way, insurance is insurance and in this case needs to be factored in to gig fees etc.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  14. Just surfed on the RED site, there was an interesting data about the weight of a configuration: about 18 pounds/8,2 kgs. If the cam is so big and heavy, how big will be the housing? My Phenom is about 11 kgs for the Z1...

However, they came out of the engineering delay...

  15. It's not gonna be something to shoot dailies with thats for sure. Can't get any fixed weights yet. The company are still making design and format changes even at this stage, the latest being whether or not they will keep or ditch the 1080P format and just go with 2 and 4K. Depending on the final configuration of lenses, HDD's, Batteries etc and then a housing into that mix, its gonna be anyone's guess. I'm not gonna stick my neck out there and even hazard a guess.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  16. Well my buddy just called me telling me to clear my Aug 30th calendar. Apparently #47 is going to be delivered this month. I told him I'd pencil him in as a maybe lunch.

  17. 3 Days to go for delivery deadline on the first orders. The fun's about to begin.....I'll admit I started getting a few butterflies when thinking of the outlay but now I'm more determined to do this. My delivery for #954 is scheduled for the end of December. Time to save a few more pennies.

  18. That's a great pic Drew! Can I borrow it?

  19. Mark , How are you going to cofigure yours ?
    Hi Paul,

OK you can use a wealth of different lens sytems to cover the 4k, 2k (and eventually) 1080P and 720P format areas respectively as covered by the Mysterium Sensor. My initial set up is looking like its going to be using the Canon 10-22mm with a Birger Engineering mounting system for EOS lenses and seems to be the option for a lot of non Cine lens adopters of the camera. There are a selection of other mounts allowing users the option to use whatever type of glass they want. For the really deep pockets you can also fit on the big cinematographic lenses from Zeiss, Arri, Cooke and Aginieux (spelling?).

It all comes down to what you want to get look wise, what you can afford and what your housing configuration will allow. Housing wise so far as I know the major players are Gates and AquaVideo. There may be others like Pace coming on the market soon as I know Vince Pace has also got reservations on a number of RED cameras. Watch for others to get in on the act soon.

For macro I'm looking into having a Tamron 90mm lens fitted with the required PL mount. For super wide, no ideas yet but looking into it.

For operating underwater the system will rely on lens rings and manual gears.

    Cheers,

    Mark.
