Peter Hughes Belize Whale Shark Trip

4 posts
  1. In a few weeks, I'm going to be on the Hughes boat to dive with the whale sharks at Placencia (during the mutton, cubera and dog snapper spawning). Obviously, I'll take wide angle lenses (15mmFE, 24mm f/1.4, and 16-35mm), and I'm also planning to take Magic Filters to use when there is sufficient ambient light.

My question (for anyone else who's ever been on this boat for this event) is whether there is any good "regular" diving during the week that would warrant taking all my macro lenses as well. (I realize that some people--Laz comes to mind--might use a macro lens to shoot whale sharks :) , but I'm more inclined to stick to wide angle.)

I don't expect the boat to spend any time in its "normal" sites, but I haven't heard whether or not it spends time with diving other than at Placencia, where the diving is presumably all in open water.

Any input/insights into this particular trip on this particular boat would be appreciated.

  2. I was going to ask similar question: Is wide angle lens a must for taking photo of whale shark??

  3. I think it is worth taking one. Weren't you glad you had a macro on our Bahamas trip for the dive under the bridge?

You never know what is going to come up, so it is better to be prepared.

It depends on how much of the whale shark you want to get in the photo. :) If you're going to get close enough for a good shot of its whole body (in the limited visibility caused by the snapper spawn), you'll definitely want a wide angle lens of SOME sort. And the wider, the better...

My question was whether I should take any lenses at the OTHER end of the spectrum (macro), and as Alex pointed out, it never hurts to have at least one macro lens along.

Which brings up another question -- can I shoot any of my macro lense through the Seacam superdome with decent results?
