Malaysian Magic!

  1. I was very lucky today because nobody else at my resort was diving at Sipadan. So I had a boat all to myself and 8 tanks for me and my dive guide (4 dives each - although we did also shoot pygmies on the house reef when we got back)!

I have managed to get my strobes working now, but I still chose to make on the dives a Magic filter one. And boy, does the Magic love Sipadan. :P

Here are a few of the shots. I don't have a RAW converter with me - so these are converted to JPGS as shot.

  2. And, of course, the obligatory turtles. OK, stealing a bit from Malcolm Hey's famous shot, but hey people copy my shots... so why shouldn't eye copy other peoples!

Magic is so well suited to shooting the turtles - and rather more reliable than strobes (well my strobes anyway :P )!

  3. Oh, lens was the 16mm, BTW.

  4. Who is Malcolm Hey? I have no idea what you are talkin about with that reference..

    Nice shots..good work!

  5. He is the only underwater photographer with an even more famous turtle shot than Eric's (OK, maybe not round here)! http://www.malcolmhey.co.uk/author.html

    :P

  6. Wow ... those turtle shots :P:D beautiful :o

I'm going to Kapali in July ... those shots make me just want to be there now!

... I think I'll start packing tomorrow ... with my magic filter :D

  7. I've been diving since 1976 and I believe that Eric has the best turtle picture I have ever seen by far. He was simply in the right place at the right time, right setup.

And the right photographer also helped a bit B)

    The turtles are great!

The middle image in the first post are demonstrated the power of the filter very well.

  9. Now that I´m going DSLR I´ll have to check that "magic" cheating!!. Is there a way to see that famous turtle shot??

  10. Alex, about how deep were you for those shots with the "Magic Ones"?

    Thanks,

    Scott

  11. I'd say I was between 5 and 12m for those shots.

I did some down to 17m, but those aren't here.

  12. Awesome turtle shots - and all the more so given the 16 mm factor!

Yikes, you must have been pushing the little fella along with your dome! :P

Any word on whether you're considering a temperate Magic - say a Mild Mustard Magic?

  13. Hi Anthony,

Lots of people are people are using the current Magic in Temperate waters and getting very nice results. But we are developing a specific temperate filter. I have already done the formula - it is just waiting for some testing (and the British sea is a bit chilly for me at the moment)! Peter, the other half of Magic, is planning to get it in the water in the next few weeks.

And yes you are right it is will be a milder filter than the current Magic. The other filter we are working on is a Auto-Magic - designed for AUTO WB use on compacts. I have one with me here - and it is working nicely - but we won't release it until after I go to the Red Sea in June.

I shot the magic again this morning. I like the cheeky shot of the turtle, and the shark, while not great, was taken at between 18-19m - and the colours impressed me. Both are as shot as I have no RAW converter on my laptop.

  14. I like the swimming turtleshots a lot.

    The rest: mwha

I have no RAW converter on my laptop.

Why, are you using a typewriter as an laptop?? :D

  15. Alex, that is great news about the Mild Magic. I'm a patient man.

I've already ordered the standard filter for my 10.5.

You always have been a bit of a weakling in cold water. I seem to recall a bloke wearing a hood in Cayman... I thought pommies were tough mate! :D

Is the shot of the cheeky turtle with your S3? I thought that died??

  16. Alex,

I like your turtle shots a lot.

Now I haven't followed the whole "history" of the magic filter completely, so here is my question and I hope it hasn't been asked......

I see you used the magic filter on the first set of turtle shots, but on the close-up one (no I don't think it is "cheeky", unless a green's expressions actually are a bit "cheeky".... B) , I think you captured their spirit nicely!!..), anyway you used the "lighter" version of the magic filter on the closeup?? Did you have to use it on the closeup, what would have happened if you used the original magic filter on the closeup, too strong?? Is it only for distance shots and what distances???

Thanks for info, I always enjoy your pics with the ultra-rich colors and feel.

    Best, Carol
