Nikon 12-24 for Guadlupe Whites

  1. "I'm sure there are some big tigers out there"

My trip to Guadalupe a couple years ago rendered plenty of big sharks along with the juveniles, which aren't shrimps either. So I would suggest taking the 12-24 along because the sharks were more than willing to come close enough to make that lens productive. When the big sharks come close you need to be wide and the 17-35 won't get it done on those occasions.

I'm heading back this year and will take my 10.5 along. With plenty of 1 hour cage shifts during the days onsite there will be opportunity to use that lens to good advantage. The 12-24 will be more productive numerically, but the 10.5 will be more impressive even though the opps will be fewer.

  2. If you're in LA, I noticed that Samy's Camera rents lenses. It might be nice to try it out on a dive or two during the trip, then buy it if you like it. I think they were only $20 a day/4-day week or something like that.

  3. Hi,

I use the 12-24mm with no diopter. It's a great pleasure with close big fishes.

Sometimes picture quality in corners is not very good. I hope I will be better with my new 8'' ikelite dome port.

    Pierre
