aquatica or nexus for d200?

  1. guys i am having a very very difficult time deciding on a brand to get for my first UW dlsr i am doing it right by researching. so far i like both of these brands but the nexus seems to have better port options, also i would have prefered if the domes and ports were made of glass instead of acrylic.

i wanted subal but it costs way more.

  2. Aquatica and Nexus both make acrylic ports. However, if glass is important to you, I think you can use the glass Athena ports w/ the Nexus housing.

  3. Hi Spoon,

Since you like Subal, I think that current Aquatica's are much more similar to Subal in design philosophy. So would be well worth checking out.

That said since you are in the Philippines - I would go with Nexus since it is a far more popular brand in that part of the world. So you will have more buddies with the same kit, service centres should be closer and there should be more local dealers. I have just been in Malaysia and Nexus was easily the most common housing brand I saw.

thanks alex. just wondering how often these housings need to be serviced? also both housings are very good imho and the new aquatica looks sweet:) anyone selling a used subal nd70? hehe

  5. I had a Nexus for my D70 and loved it! It was VERY well made and compact. I ended up trading it for a Subal just to get the magnified viewfinder. The Subal was also VERY well made and compact. I ended up trading the Subal ND70 in to Ryan at Reef Photo (sponsor of this site) for a Subal ND20 (for the D200). You might check with him and see if he still has it. It was in excellent condition.

I would not hesitate to get another Nexus.

  6. Ive used the nexus system for 10 years. First withan n90, then the last year or so with a d70. Ive never had a flood or any equiptment malfuction. they are light easy to use and rugged. Ive had great service with marine camera in san diego. If i didnt win an aquatica housing i was going to get one for a d2x, im keeping the nexus.

  7. I have a Subal and the wife a Nexus; both for N90s cameras.

Here is the differences I've suun between the two:

The Nexus has slightly larger diameter O rings. Provides a better seal.

Subal changed O ring size several years ago and it can't be discerned just by eye. So if you are thinking about buying any used ports, don't get an old one mixed in as it will leak.

The Nexus is slightly smaller; better for small hands.

The Subal ports are a 1/4 turn bayonet lock as opposed to the Nexus which is a screw on. While we've never had a Nexus come loose, many times it takes two to unscrew the Nexus ports.

Both are well made and have a large selection of ports. Therefor there should be minimal price difference.

Be sure about your desire for glass over plastic ports. Plastic will scratch easier, but you can polish it out by hand. Push a glass port against coral and t will scratch also, but you can't polish it out.

This is the solution for that....and the Fisheye Fix Lights

Lightweight and takes up very little room.
