Oly SP-350 or E900 regarding the strobe

7 posts
  1. Hi,

i still cant decide what camera to buy. Anyone ever tried to use the SP350 with an TTL Convertor Kabel and for example YS60 strobe?

Iam looking forward to this combination because its a cheap alternative for the Inon2000 strobe.

    Olymups SP350 (250€) + Oly Case (250€) + Oly TTL Konverter (160€) + YS60 (used on ebay ~ 170€) = 830€

    Oly TTL Konverter

    or

    Fuji E900 + Ikelite (580€) + Inon2000 (~400€) = 980€

Ive no idea how realiable the first example works. Any of you guys ever tried it? Ill go dive only twice a year so i want to get the best for my money. Unfortunately my old YS60 broke down and i did some shots with my old canonS40 in Egpyt weeks ago - but wihtout a external strobe .... no good ;)

I tend to the Oly Kombination. Need it in Oktober, Manado here ill come *yipieeh* :P

Thanks for your final comments :D

    cheers,

    Marcus

  2. Marcus,

When I inquired there was not a ttl converter available for the PT-030 housing that would allow you to convert over to Sea&Sea. This was due to the size of the bulkhead fitting that was needed. There is however a converter for Nikonos for the SB-105 flash. There are also some other alternatives. Here's a link to the photo of LarryC's rig which he has used successfully. Here is also a link to a photo of what I'm using and the associated prices I paid.

You can also find some of my results in the photo section.

    Good luck,

  3. Hi again,

so what kind of system would you prefer with the oly 350:

with Oly TTL Konverter and YS60 strobe or with optical fibre cable and

    INON 2000 strobe ?

with the ttl converter its possible to turn off your internal flash completely.

    thanks for your help,

    Marcus

  4. I use the Inon's with my E900 and like them very much, due to their ACC circuitry that cancels out the camera flash and makes the E900 cycle much faster. It's a simple system and the strobes are compact and easy to use.

  5. Marcus,

I have the Olympus FL-20 flash with housing which I got for around $220 new. This enabled me to have an external strobe that utilizes the camera's ttl. I've got some good results with this strobe for close up fish pictures, small WA reef shots and macro. However, the strobe beam is narrow and needs a diffuser for it to have a good lighting effect so it won't make a good flash for larger subjects. With that said, this ttl strobe would make an excellent trigger for a larger, complimentary strobe like Inon. My desire is to complement this ttl strobe with an inon or other optically fired strobe that has more power. LarryC has done this with the fl-20 flash and the sunpak in a fairly inexpensive fashion. I haven't seen any underwater results yet from him. The nice thing about the Inon's are the built in focus light and their ability to cover a wide area. If I had the money today, I would get the inon. BTW, with an external strobe I can now completely disable the internal strobe of my camera which means my batteries last longer and recycle times are faster.

    Later,

    Gary

  6. Hi,

Jack, did you take those Sulawsi pics with your E900 / Inon Rig ??

    If so i hope iam able to take such nice pictures from Sulawesi too;

iam there in September to dive Bunaken and Lembeh.

I think i go for the E900 / Ikelite housing / Inon Rig then.

    o god my money :D

Am i able to turn off internal flash completly? But how fires the inon then, i thought the inon fires because of the pre-flash of the e900 ?

  7. Jack,

I have to agree with Marcus...you're pics are nice. I found them a little addictive! I noticed that your pictures of your WA shots had phenomenol even coverage. You listed that you had the Fuji with an Inon lens...can you elaborate on that? ie it looks as though you also had the Inon flash(1 or 2 flashes) going. Do you use any Inon accessory lenses with your Fuji? How flexible are they? Sorry for all the questions...later,

    Gary
