Triggering ext strobes 4 digicams without hotshoes

  1. If you are using a digital camera without a hotshoe connection, can you tell me what external strobe you are using and how you are triggering it? Can you tell me if your setup works well or not.

    Thanks,

    Charlie

  2. I assume that you're talking about consumer type digital cameras, not dSLR. If it is so, then you have to use a slave triggering system.

For strobes that have built-in cells (e.g. most Inon strobes, some Sea&Sea, etc.), it's a simple matter of using a fibre optic cable (like this one http://www.inonamerica.com/content/product...r_00559_lg.jpg), and attaching one end to the camera in front of its built-in flash, and the other end in front of the strobe's slave cell.

If your strobe doesn't have a built-in slave cell (e.g. most Ikelites, Nikon SB, etc.), it may still be possible to use it by attaching external slave cells (e.g. http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/dsensors.html) to the strobe.

  3. My wife uses an Ikeline DS50 with a manual controller slave with her Sea and Sea DX5000. She closes the cover on the onboard flash, and the slave fires every time.

If anything, it might be a bit too sensitive as it will fire if pointed toward the sun in shallow depths. Every time I take a photo of her with my camera, it also fires, which turns out to be a cool effect.

  5. Found newer strobes that do slave triggering and TTL with an overrides to the number of preflashes your camera will fire before the real flash.

    Fantasea Remora for $185USD

    Sea&Sea YS-27DX $260-349USD

    Ikelite DS-51 $379USD

I still use my Hienrich Wiekamp's Digital Adapter2 with my nikon connected Ikelite Substrobes but I can not switch the preflash override easily (IMHO) underwater. So I have to decide on shooting manual exposure mode or shutter-preferred mode before I leave the house. I use old Ikelite substrobes which do NOT have enough power to go thru the 5 menu configuration so this is my handicap (the strobes). I reset the configurations using my Substrobe 300 at 1/4 power so I can make it thru the DA2's 5 menu configuration.
