Ikelite DS125 or DS200 compatible with Subal CD1D?
8 posts
I just ordered a Subal CD1D Housing for my Canon EOS 1D Mk2. Now I turn my attention to lighting.
After much research I have decided on an Ikelite. I called my agent who imports both Subal and Ikelite and he told me that Ikelite used to work fine with Subal Housings when film was around, but now that digital is here, they don't work so well - if at all.
Is this true? and if so what alternative lighting rig does anyone on this forum recommend for a Subal CD1D Housing and a Canon EOS 1D Mk2?
thanks
Alexxxy
That is utter hogwash.
The Ikelite strobes will work just fine with your Subal housing. See the article here at Wetpixel in our Features and/or Reviews section about how to hook them up.
Cheers
James
This is my reply from the other thread on this topic - which got deleted as I typed it!
Hi Alexxxy,
The should be no problem getting your strobes to fire. What you dealer is referring to is that the TTL flash metering will not work. So you will have to use the strobes in manual power settings.
So don't worry they work fine. You just won't have TTL metering on your strobes.
Wetpixel Owner & Editor Eric and Wetpixel co-admin James both use/have used EOS 1D Mk2 with the Ikelite strobes on many many occassions.
Alex
p.s. depending on how the housing is wired and what ike synch cords you are using - you may need to modify things a little to stop the strobes and the camera talking to each other too much.
Sorry Alex.
I have a Subal ND2 and use Ike DS125's, they are great, like Alex said, no TTL, but I don't need it.
Thanks guys, but don't I need TTL? Or do you just get by with Manual settings on the strobe by trial and error?
