  1. Ha ha! Just heard from the shop and my 500D has arrived! Much to everyone's shock as Canon told us yesterday that they didn't have any! Excellent.

Now I just have to find the money. Quick, better sell some pix.

  2. Use a penny to hold the zoom gear knob out? Now thats a clever idea. Alex; does it stay in place for a days diving?

Hell yea, Alex is very careful with money.

I've adjusted the gear now - following Dave's advice - took all of 5 seconds. Great tip, Dave!

  5. No problem. Just remember to put it back if you use a zoom lens. If you stick with the 105 and 10.5 you can leave it alone. Or the 17-55. Because of the diameter of the zoom gear for that lens you can adjust it to work the zoom gear without pushing on the 105 VR.

I actually bought the lens to shoot the Tour of Califorina. I love this lens and leave it on my camera a lot.

The lens works well with the flip macromate. The macromate is a multiple element achromatic lens system.

  6. Congrats Alex!

I got mine a few days ago too, ordered it back in April. They must have their production line in gear!

One thing I did not think of before is that the VR is supposed to help the AF lock on - seems to work too!

I am happy to say that I am now the proud owner of a Nikon 105mm VR macro lens. The old 105mm was my second most productive lens (after the 10.5mm Fisheye) and it is great to have some new improved glass as a replacement for this spot in my arsenal.

  7. So now that you've got yours tell us, how do you like the AF?

Is it really faster than the old 105mm to lock on? Is it better in low light?

I've got one on order from my local camera store. I'm still debating if its worth it. Faster AF is THE reason for me to look into this lens. I've discovered I'm not patient enough to manually focus the 105mm

  8. I don't have manual focus gears for either 105mm. I will report on its AF performance after I have given it a proper workout in Bali.

One advatange I think is significant over the old lens, that I have not heard anyone mention is the bokeh. The new 105mm VR is very nice in this respect.

Anyway, the proof will be in the Balinese pudding.

  9. Very Fast Autofocus. It does tend to hunt if there is nothing in the focus area. Low light performance is degraded. I turn on the focus light.

  10. I have a friend who owns nikon 3T and 4T close up lenses but they are 52mm ¿?... I guess they are good on the older 105 (52 mm thread) but do you think you can use them in the new 105 on a cropped sensor with a reduction ring and not vignetting?
