Canon rumors

10 posts
  1. Rumors are flying in all photography forums about new and exciting announcements from Canon during the second half of August. Lots of people are mentioning a 22mp 1ds MK3, an APS size sensor 3D and a price drop on the 1ds MK2. Chip in if you have any inside knowledge!

  2. No idea if this comes from a credible source but its nice to look at/dream about even though my 20D still has a few good years of live in it.

  3. People still shoot Canon? huh.. who knew? ;)

  4. I knew this day would come...and I was dreading it! ;) I tell myself I'm happy with what I've got, but I've said that before...only to find that I'm driven by pixel envy to spend more money! :D :glare:

One of the biggest issues for many of us will be whether the 1DsMkIII (if that's what it's called) will have the same body config as the MkII models...so we can use it in our existing housings!

The 2.5" LCD would sure be nice, too; when I switch to my Mk IIN for topiside shooting that warrants its 8.5fps high-speed shooting, the big LCD is one of the things I notice most!

  5. It would be great for Canon users if it fitted in the same housing as the current series. Unfortunately, my money would be on it not fitting - as the only gripe you really hear about the 1Ds Mk2 is the ergonomics and weight - so I think Canon will probably address these issues.

22MP I guess will give it a similar pixel density to Nikon's D2X? It will be interesting to see how the corner sharpness is with such small pixels.

Judging on Canon's last effort, the 5D, we can expect great things.

A full frame with the pixel density of the D2X would be 30.5 M pixels (12.2x2.5).

The corner sharpness is a lens issue, and I don't think that a different sensor would change that. If you make the same size print, it'd probably look the same in the problem areas. For a give lens the fix is to shoot at smaller aperture and higher ISO. If Canon can further improve the high ISO performance, it would make it possible to go to smaller apertures.

The multiplier is 2.25 for effective mp so the result would be 27+. But Alex's query is on point because corner sharpness is a matter of lens, dome and sensor size. And when I think about this 22mp sensor it dawns on me, after some quick calcs, that you can crop corners, about 1/3 and still end up with the same 30% more resolution than the 16.6 Canon at the same crop and 18% more than the 12.4 mp Nikon uncropped. Suddenly, for those who appreciated it, Nikon's sweet spot isn't the cat's ass anymore ;)

Of course it still depends on whether Canon can handle pixel density with the same ability as Nikon, and it depends on whether or not the added resolution, or the resolution differences in the crop references above, will really matter.

Thanks for correcting. I keep forgetting that the Nikon crop is 1.5x while the Canon crop is 1.6x

Heck, I keep forgetting whether or not I took my meds
