The (fish) eyes have it...

  1. Somehow as a diver I am fascinated by fish eyes. They are both familiar and completely alien. Here are a few from Sipidan. The first is a closeup of a cuttlefish eye. It is my favorite from the whole trip. The web view doesn't do it justice since you can't see all of the detail in the chromatophores. The second two are some sort of coral trout. I think they are pretty common, but I haven't identified them yet.

  2. Great portraits Steve!

    With your 100 macro?

Got any more for us to enjoy?

  3. I think the middle one is a Honeycomb Grouper (Epinephelus merra)

  4. Yep, I'm an 'eye man' too!

Here's a couple from my last trip (with our very own Dr M)..........

The reflection in the Cornetfish's eye is the reef behind me, & the blue spotted rays eye is a fovourite of my god-son - who calls it Batman!

PS as an aside, can someone tell me why my pics come up as thumbnails, whilst drsteve's (excellent) pics are full size???

  7. The cuttlefish eye shows nice emotion. Cool shot.

  8. The cuttlefish eye shows nice emotion.  Cool shot.

    The question is what emotion?

Anger, Curiosity, Playfulness, Sexual Attraction :) ?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

  9. can someone tell me why my pics come up as thumbnails, whilst drsteve's (excellent) pics are full size???

drsteve is linking to images that are hosted elsewhere on the internet, while you are attaching the file to your post. With the first method (using the IMG button at the top of the window when writing your post) you'll get a large image embedded, while using the attach method results in the clickable thumbnails you are seeing for your shots.

  10. That emotion is the simplest one ever. Don't you know? It's a cuttlefish after toking a little ganja :) Dude!

  11. Here is another eye from Mabul. It isn't a great image of a crocodilefish, but I find it amazing that they can see the forest through the tree, as it were. This is a crop since on this dive I had my 17-40 on, which is fine for the fish, but not great for getting detail in the eye.

  12. Here is one more. I don't know if I mentioned that Sipidan is just thick with Green turtles. Here is one giving me the "eye". The neck is a little blown out, but I was able to save most of the image since I was shooting RAW. This image is actually a blending of two RAW conversions of the same file. One gets the water and eye right. The other (mostly) brings back the overexposed neck.
