Anybody know what the little clip thingie that comes with the D200, part #DK-5 is for?
It seems to clip over the viewfinder where the eyepiece cup fits. I cannot find it in the manual or the on the Nikon website.

I knew I was the only one who really read the manual cover to cover. It slides over the eyepiece as you say, and when there it keeps light out of the camera when shooting in the mirror up mode.
When you are doing a long exposure on a tripod, light entering through the viewfinder and being projected down onto the focusing screen/exposure sensors can cause a miscalculation of the exposure necessary. So the theory is that you mount the camera on a tripod, compose and establish the exposure, then slide the DK5 over the eyepiece before you make the actual exposure.
While this is the theoretical reason, I have not personally experienced any real problems with light impinging on the sensors during long exposures, and don't use the cover in day to day use.
OK thanks, that's what I thought. Old Nikons had a lever you moved which moved a curtain over the viewfinder.
But why does it have a clip on the back, is it like a nerd clip to clip it to your shirt or something?
You use the clip on the back to attach it to your camera strap when the cover is not in use. Then the cover gets knocked off the strap and you lose it.

That's for sure, I've already lost an LCD cover taken off for underwater. I hate worrying about the little pieces, lens caps etc, seems like they always somehow get out of the plastic bags I put them in. Do these cameras have the light meters in the prism housing? I was under the impression that they metered off the focal plane shutter, or is that just for flash?
Thanks for the info.
As I understand it, the sensors for the meter are actually in the pentaprism/focusing screen region. Sensors for TTL flash were in the mirror box and read off the film, but I'm pretty sure that these sensors are not used any more with the dTTL systems.
If you look through the view finder with no battery in the body, you'll notice that the viewfinder is darker than usual. This is because of the liquid crystal elements in the viewfinder/focusing screen. They become more transmissive to light when powered up. How this works is beyond me ![]()
