Sea and Sea YS110

  1. I've just spoken to Alan James. He confirmed that I shouldn't use 2 separate synch cords on my DX-D200, but would be better-off taking a double synch cord instead.

He also mentioned that the YS110 would not fire via the cable if the Slave switch was set to 'On'.

Did Alan by any chance say why not to use 2 seperate synch cords? We've just gotten YS110s also, and did 3 dives with them sofar. This is with 2 sync cords on a D2x and i didnt notice any particular problem with that.

I would not be surprised if leaving the slave switch to On would cause a problem. We've had problems with that on our YS90DX. At first glance (just tried it) it seems to fire just fine, but on the YS90DX, we get all kinds of weird problems when we set them to slave.

  2. Hi Cor,

Interesting. I guess it's just because of the wiring on the DX-D200. I'll try to have a good play with it next week (with both one dual cord and 2 separate ones) and will let you know what I find.

I had a few problems on the YS90DX, the biggest one being the quenching which I solved by taping the sensor, but I never had a problem when setting them to slave though.

Looks like S&S strobes can have a mind of their own sometimes, eh !

  3. Hi Trevor, I can verify your YS110/YS90 problem. We can not fire a YS90 by itself when a YS110 is attached to the same camera. That is totally annoying! We also are having some weird issue afterall with 2 single cables and the YS110's. On land we can fire both strobes, but underwater 1 YS110 refuses to fire. We're hoping it's the cable so we're going diving now with a new set of single cables. We have never had this problem with any S&S strobe, we've always used single cables.

We noticed a third problem as well. The slave sensor is so insensitive as to make it almost unusable as a slave. We have to basically point the strobes straight at eachother. We did a few simple tests with 2 YS110s and 2 YS90DX's and the YS90s will fire as a slave in almost any direction while the YS110s will only fire if there is a direct line of sight with the slave sensor.

These 3 problems combined make the YS110 kind of a problematic strobe for us.. not unusable, but annoying to say the least.
