streaming video question

  1. This is a follow up to Wagsy's commet in this thread: http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16353

We also want to look at streaming the stuff in high res to foks out there in broadband ADSL 2 land using DMR as I think that could work well or even let them download the file with DMR so that only lasts a few days etc.

What are the definition of ADSL 2 ?

DMR -what is that, and is it a technology that is available now ?

So soon maybe we can all share our work to the masses just like the large TV networks do now and not only that, we are not force to watch those anoying *&^%$ adds.

Inspired by the same thread with the debate about the TV shows quality, why don't we "just" build our own online TV channel, where people can stream our videos, and pay a small amount pr. film watched. It should have an index with small trailers, which would make peoble paying to see the entire film.

2 things are needed: the software to control the paying and the streaming, and a webserver with lot's of bandwith.

Perhaps it's a bit early, but I am pretty sure that it will be the "next thing".

    What say you ?

DMR = Digital Media Receivers... and it's been around for about a year.

    ADSL2 = ITU G.992.3/4 standard which I think is about 10-12mbps d/l speed

    ADSL2+= ITU G.992.5 which hits 20-24mbps I believe.

What you suggest about the online TV channel is already available somewhat on Itunes and a few other sites. Internet delivery is the wave of the future that's coming fast.

However, making it work will be difficult as you have the same digital rights issues as iTunes does internationally.

  3. Yes and we here in Exmouth should get 8 mbps ADSL 2 soon :)

So a 4 or 6 mbps encoded 1280/720 wmv should play fine in realtime. :)

You can watch it on your computer or even burn it to a disk but you have to have the unlock key-registraion that will let the file play for a few days. Then it justs stops playing :( . DMR = Digital Media Rights

But I suppose it will not take long before some teenage KID cracks it. See that KID that cracked the CSS on DVD's a few years ago has now cracked the code itunes songs were embedded with that stopped mp3 downloaded from itunes playing on other brands of mp3 players. :(

Drew why would your location be a problem? I downloaded some DVIX clips once that made me go register for 3 days usage. Yep after 3 days it stopped working :( .

Yes free to air TV is going to have a hard time soon as even Hollywood movies will have DMR and you can download and beem it out to you TV via a wireless device or lan etc.

There will be all types of high res stuff to watch all over the place.

I'll see what else I can dig up.

Yes, there are already many ways of offering high resolution videos via the internet for payment, including as RSS feeds (podcasts). Most involve downloads, but realtime streaming of high rez vids is becoming more feasible as internet connections get faster and codecs get better. The sky's the limit and the future looks outrageous for video via internet!

For payment, there are outfits like Klicktab that offer payment gateways for folks who want to sell podcasts. And there are already video podcasts on iTunes that are going with "higher" rez videos such as the boozy, pioneering podcast, Tiki Bar TV. Their most recent 'cast weighs in at nearly 63 MB and is 640x360 in H.264 at 1625 kbps. Great image!

But the issues with podcasts and/or internet TV for pay can really get thorny, such as who gets paid how much and for what, and how would that all be structured. Then there's the issue of liability and business structure to deal with that. Drew is definitely right on that making it work would be difficult, but certainly doable. These are some of the reasons that DiveFilm Podcast Video remains a not-for-profit labor of love and free to viewers. (However, I am toying with the idea of making some of the podcasts available as higher resolution videos for those who are interested. Of course, this raises the issue of server space....)

All that is really needed is for some very energetic and knowledgeable person with good server access to take this on and make it happen. [Wags!?] The technology is already there, and will just keep getting better.

    Thanks for the feedback.

The technology is here, but it's not perfect yet, and it's not easy to master and it's not cheap.

But I suspect it to improve in quality, and become more easily assessable and a lot cheaper in the future.

The only question is, when that future will be here ?

    Soon I hope :(

  6. Drew why would your location be a problem? I downloaded some DVIX clips once that made me go register for 3 days usage. Yep after 3 days it stopped working :( .

Location is the most limiting factor. Just like iTunes can sell certain music in certain countries because of distribution rights. Or the silly zone deal with DVDs. Some countries may not have copyright protection (or badly enforced) so d/ls become a problem.

Streaming media is coming... in a big way.
