Canon S40 with Housing

  1. Anybody tried Canon S40 with Canon housing?

What strobe did you use? Ikelite, Sea&Sea...

  2. Now I need to get:

    Casing

    Spare Battery

    1 Gig Micro Drive

    Micro Drive Notebook PCMCIA Adaptor

    Substrobes

    Trays

    Photo quality color printer

More Hardisk for notebook and PC

    ...

One small thing leads to so much more expenditure... must be a conspiracy!

  3. Hi David,

I have a Canon S30 with the Canon UW housing. I've only used it once, while snorkeling, but I'm relatively satisfied. Haven't used a strobe... don't have the money for it, but i'd like to know which one you choose...

on another note, sea & sea is offering a conversion lens adapter that fits on the WP-DC200 and WP-DC100 underwater housings... hopefully that will mean that the lens adapter for the WP-DC300 is on the way... they could even be the same size for all i know... i'll have to find out..

  4. I just bought the IBM 1 Gig Micro Drive, now hunting for casing.

Are the other Canon IXUS... and A... and S... all have the same focal length and zoom.

If they are, then probably the Sea & Sea close up/macro kit will fit and the framer will be of the correct distance and size. Just wondering.

  5. I just spoke with someone at sea & sea about the conversion lens adapter for the WP-DC300... they say there is one being developed right now, but they're not sure when it will be available... They might not even make it to the US, as the company that manufactures them is in Japan, and not all their products make it over here. Fortunately, the person I spoke with seemed fairly confident that they will eventually be available in the US..

the WP-DC300 also is a different size from the DC100 and DC200, so the conversion lens adapters for these cases wouldn't fit.

  6. Thanks, never even thought of the actual casing lens diameter. Just assumed they would use the same mold design for that part.

  7. Just Ordered the S40 casing, hope it will come in soon. Try it out in the pool first, then out to sea.

Why so carefull? That thing looks like a toy, besides I want to get used to using it underwater before screwing up in the sea.

  8. David,

FYI, INON introduced their line of wide and macro attachment lens for the Canon WP-DC300/400 Underwater Housing at the Tokyo Diving Festival 2002. The INON lens adapter is compatible with the INON UCL-330 macro lens or the INON UWL-100 wide angle lens. Release date is May 2002.

  9. Will look out for the INON product in the local photo dive shops. Due to Chinese New Year Sales, I am told Canon Singapore has run out of underwater housing. Also because it is a specialty item, it keeps very low stock levels to begin with.

  10. Will try in the pool first and see how it goes. Wish I had the Ikelite DS-125, but will try the SS-100a with TTL slave and see what happens.

  11. I am a newcomer in underwater Digital photography. I used to use a Nikon Action Touch to take pictures but I had to switch to fixed focus because AF doesn't work underwater.

With my Canon A20 I intend to buy a housing but what about the AutoFocus? Does it work underwater? Because I don't think I can disable the AF of the A20. What difference with the Nikon Action Touch AF?

    Thanks for your answers

    Charly

  12. I wanted to try it in the pool, but just no time.

After my dive vacation, 12 hours away, I will be able to answer your question, about 10 days from now.

  14. Just got back from 7 days in Maldives.

The S40 definately will focus underwater. Most of the time my wife was the actual user with no photographic experience. Yet the shots and exposure came out pretty good. Since the DS-125 is not available in Singapore yet, and I could not get the Night Rider HID light on time, we just used the internal flash.

The results are quite amazing for such a small package.

  15. Hi David

Were you planning on using the Nightrider to provide illumination instead of a strobe?

I'm quite interested in that idea - does it work?

    Dave

  16. Yes, I wanted to use the Night Rider HID to illuminate the subject.

Since it is a fancy underwater torch, you can always see the colors and brightness of the subject. There should be a lower likely hood of screwing up.

Besides that, the S40 can shoot 30 seconds of video clips. So having a powerful HID Light also makes sense.

  17. I have some video shot w/ my Coolpix where you can see the comparison between the Ikelite Pro Video Lite and the Niterider HID lite.

Here is a link to the Quicktime movie (1.5 megs):

As you can see, the Niterider is a much more focused "spot" light and won't be suitable for anything except macro shooting, IMO. At the very least, you would HAVE to use a diffuser.

The light from the HID lamp is also a MUCH higher Kelvin so won't appear as "warm" as a Halogen lamp. You might want to keep this in mind also.

    I hope this helps you,

    Cheers

  18. I got an S40 and u/w case in December. It's a stopgap until I can justify housing my D30, which is pricey!

My only dive using it to date was in march in Monterey, CA, pictures here:

    http://www.seanansorge.com/monterey_02_03_02

We had a close encounter with a harbor seal and a very hungry octopus.

I already had a pair of bright video lights, so I hooked those to the S40 housing, but it's not quite enough light. Exposure times at ISO 100 were down around 1/60 when shooting under that dark kelp. I'm quite spoiled by the D30, but I like this little camera and will probably keep it for casual use.

The one problem I did have was the lens port fogging up. About 40 minutes into the dive in Monterey it started to fog badly, not sure if a good cleaning will fix that or not.

  19. The Canon WP-DC300 comes with an anti-fog solution. I tried it and it works in Tropical waters. This means the temperature difference betweem Camera and Water is not as great as what you would experience in Monterey.

So try the anti-fog solution, it worked for me.

  20. I guess I should actually look at all the stuff in the box! Thanks I'll give that a try.
