  1. I haven't got a Canon version of this lens, but I presume that it is similar enough to allow a filter to be taped on in the same way? Can someone confirm this?

Here's the rear of the Canon version, Alex:

It's not quite the same, but similar. Seems to be missing that protruding plastic piece. I'll take measurements later.

  2. Hi Alex,

would your wideangle macro technique, using the 1.5 teleconverter, work with this lens, too?

    Best regards,

    --Rob

  3. The main problem I would have if I tried to use this lens with a TC is that my zoom gear would no longer align.

That said, this lens has such good close focus you'd get a pretty decent macro effect as standard.Maybe not the extreme macro effect possible with the TC, but a good start. Gary has posted several close up shots taken with the standard 10-17mm.

    Alex

p.s. Thanks Matt for posting that photo of the Canon version. Looks much harder to attach a filter to the Canon version.

  4. Had a look at my other canon fit lenses, and this seems to be a "unique" design. The mount looks different for the sigma 15 FE, the standard zoom, 50 f1.8 and the 60mm macro.......

    my ideas at the moment

a slight overfit filter, with a small edge on the underside to keep it from slipping.

You migt be able to tape it to the underside of the filter, make a 90 turn and tape it to the outside of the small protruding bit in the middle witht the glass in it

Final attempt: use a larger filter and totally fill the circle. So that the filter lies on top of the glass, and cant move anymore. Doesnt matter if it is square or round, as long as its a tight fit.. (also, more filter to selle for Alex :-)

PS: Dont have this lens yet, but it looks like I want this lens also in the end

  5. i thought about a similar way to fix the filter ... but after trying with a bit of paper ... it is not the way i want to fix it.

would be perfect to have a round filter with a kind of tube that just fits over the top of that round thing there ... so it would be easier to put it on and off. because when taping it's just too much work to put it on and off ... if it is so complicated i would end up never using the filter ...

  6. thats more or less what i was referring to with the small ridge....but better put !

I don't think it has to be a very long tube, there has just to be a small edge to keep the filter from wandering. Now I am thinking more about it: it shouldnt drop off as well....... dont know how the lens fits inside the camera. In my 20d there is a big gaping hole before the shutter, but you wouldnt want the filter between that as well.....

  7. ah. ok sorry. then we ment the same thing ...

yes. the shutter is another problem. but i think only if the filter comes loose ... as these cams are EF-S lens compatible, there must be some space for the filter.

i just tried something with an O-Ring ... put i dont have the right size of o-ring ... with the ring, that is just the right size ... it could hold. then just glue the filter on the ring. should work.

i will check for a ring next week.

  8. Damn Wetpixel! That's another £475 plus zoom gear I had to spend!

  9. serge: no reason to be sorry. When trying be sure to use a type of glue that when dry doesnt leave any residual odour...you wouldnt want any uncalled for fumes inside the camera... Not sure which one to use.

  10. John,

I really think that this is a perfect lens for underwater photo-journalism and I think it will be ideal for what you do.

I don't know the zoom gear - but it is a fairly standard size - so I am sure you'll be able to find one for the Sea and Sea off the shelf.

Thanks Alex. If it works out OK it will save me swapping between the 10.5 and 12-24. I looked at the zoom ring and guessed with Steve's help that the one for the 18-35 will fit. I will find out in a few days when it arrives. I wonder if I will need a shallow extension ring between the housing and dome port. I will find out. Thanks again!

  12. At the wide size on cropped sensor (1.5 for Nikon) how wide is it?

  13. The main problem I would have if I tried to use this lens with a TC is that my zoom gear would no longer align.

What is the extension ( depth ) and diameter of your TC ?

Has anyone checked the the various TC's with this lense for compatability ?

  14. You still guys are way too techy :)

  15. At the wide size on cropped sensor (1.5 for Nikon) how wide is it?

I find that it is slightly less wide than the 10.5mm - but the difference is small and you have to really look to see it.

  16. I'll take measurements later.

The inner element (containing glass) is ~0.75in diameter.

Moving outward, the inner diameter (after crossing that gap) is ~1.375in.

The outer diameter (where plastic meets metal) is ~2in. (Note that there are various odd ridges, etc due to the electrical contacts).

I'd imagine that a rectangular filter strip of length ~1.5in and width ~0.75in could be taped down on the outer plastic part (crossing over the glass) without impeding the electrical contacts, nor presenting the attachment issues of a circular piece.

  17. rene from the german digideep.com forum has already a magicfilter on the canon tokina ... he told us, that he cut out a big circle, so that it fits in the body ... he just needed to cut out a smaller part for the contacts.

the filter seems to be stable in this position. i think it's quite a good idea, because it is so big, that its quite save from falling off and falling into the shutter ...

anyone has a concern with this method? i think also alex should be happe, because quite lots of filter is needed :)

  18. What is the extension ( depth ) and diameter of your TC ?

I've only played with it topside with TC's. Focus seems to work with a kenko 1.4x + Tokina FE on a Canon 400D. AF problems with a kenko 2.0x (hard to get a focus lock... best using it with MF)

Hmm... got a short dive trip to the Philippines coming up Wed. Will try to fit one of my magic filters into the Tokina FE and give it a try...

  19. This lens looks like it could replace my 10.5 and Sigma 15mm FE..

    M.

  20. Thanks Alex. If it works out OK it will save me swapping between the 10.5 and 12-24. I looked at the zoom ring and guessed with Steve's help that the one for the 18-35 will fit. Is there any chance Mr Bantin could try this out behind a Sea and Sea compact dome port ? Alan James says the Nikon 10.5 works with this port and a Sea and Sea extention port 40. Us poor folks could do without having to buy another port  .
