  1. Rodge I think there's something wrong with your calculator, or the guy quoting you is lost in space. I assume you are in thailand or indonesia. Even the guys at Prodive Bangkok are not that expensive and they sell new stuff. If you are in thailand, contact Aquasports and Pro Dive.

Even in thailand and Indo where import tax is 7% and 11% respectively, there is no way someone can charge $4k for a used PD170. Hell I'll sell you my old VX2100 for 1/2 that in that case. I think you should walk VERY far away from these guys.

  4. Roger: My comments were aimed at my experience with the TRV900 and not the price you posted. In terms of pricing I totally agree with other posts that the price being asked for the TRV900 rig is wacky. You might consider asking the larger underwater photography shops, like the ones that advertise on this site, what second-hand equipment they have for sale. Lots of people are selling their gear as they upgrade to HD.

  5. At Bignote in Bangkok the Sony PD170 today costs 139,000 baht. That's USD 4180 brand new!

In 2003 my nearly-new Gates housing (same as PD170) cost 125,000 baht including external monitor and flat and standard ports. At today's exchange rate that's USD 3759. It had been used 3 times but came with warranty as it was bought from a dealer.

USD 14400 is 2 to 3 times over the odds. How about USD 3000 tops for the camera (if it's in mint condition but bear in mind used is used) and USD 2000 to USD 4000 for the housing and bits depending on the condition and number of accessories. If you're buying Gates second hand check for white powdery corrosion between the stainless steel latches and the aluminium body.

Also the PD170 should have a meter in it to show how many hours it's been used. My Z1 has anyway so I guess the PD170 has. You access it through the menus.

    Hi!

Have tried to find something secondhand here in Thailand without success. The PD170 I have seen uses a Ikelite bucket of a housing and I would like something a bit more streamlined.

Is the PD170 bigger then the old vx1000? My buddy have a vx 1000 with a Amphibico housing and its not that big. What is the name of the Gates housing you have for your PD170?

Tried to e-mail Scuba Cam in Singapore and Aqua Imaging in Bangkok with little success.

If I could find something like your housing I might have what I am looking for...

  7. Yeah I'm not a fan of the Ikelite housing for the VX2000. A "bucket" as you say.

The VX2000/VX2100/PD150/PD170 were all based on the same body and yes, a little larger than the VX1000 but not much.

The Gates housing for those was just called the same as the camera models (e.g. "Gates housing for Sony DCR-VX2000 and PD150"). The VX2100/PD170 were a little taller than their precessors so Gates modified the housing a little then. As I remember the PD170 would squeeze in the older housing but not the VX2100. Anyway I think all of them are now out of production and off their site.

I have a friend who has an excellent condition VX2000 with Amphibico housing. I'll see if he wants to sell as he hasn't used them for a good while.

Bear in mind that with Gates and Amphibico for these cams you will get vignetting (black corners) and will need to zoom in a bit from wide to avoid it.

I'll reply to your PM now.

  8. I think i may have seen the housings that rodge is talking about on ebay a while back. I think it's a video shop in cairns.

The pd170 housing is overpriced due to the port options - it has the fancy fathoms port, i think.

The cameras will have been hammered though if i'm correct, doing dailies for years.

    Hi again!

What functions can I reach with the manual controls on the standard Amphibico Navigator 900 (for the Sony TRV 900) house?

Would it be hard to get a wideangle lens etc for the housing or are there lots of them around that will fit?

How much would a 80 degree wideangle lens cost?

Your best guess will do just fine!

    Cheers

    Roger
