as far as i know TTL is not working with Nikon SB1005.
it will only work in manual not ttl. You just need a sync cord for one strobe and the other on slaveas far as i know TTL is not working with Nikon SB1005.

As said , uou can use the SB 105 only in manual mode.
A better option is to use Ikelite 4116.32 Sync Cord Ikelite housing to Two Nikonos SB, that way both strobes are connected.
Is that because the slave somtimes is iffy?

Until I bought the double strobe cable, I used single strobe connected to the camera and the second in slave mode as you describes, for macro it's worked quite good, almost every time the slave strobe fired also, in WA its worked very bad, only if you have a big & close object that reflect the light of the master to the slave it will be activate, of course its won't work at all if each strobe is pointed to different position.
I now have the double cord and its work great, the second single cord is for backup or if I want to dive with one strobe attached to the housing.

Ebay is a good place to find this items, sometimes with really funny prices.
I bought there my two cords, the single cost me 16$ and the double around 50-60$

There is another thread about similar setup, for 2 x SB800, and I think the solution is link the two flash with fiber optics:
