Request help on Nexus Port for Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye Lens

  1. Hi

I have been advise by my supplier to use FP160 dome port rather than the Nexus recommend ZP1017 dome port for the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens. As the ZP1017 would cause a image blooming on the results.

Any help on this subject is kindly appreciated.

    TQ

  2. I am not a Nexus user, but from what I have heard the dedicated Nexus port for the Tokina 10-17mm is supposed to be very good.

Although I would wait to hear from actual Nexus users before making your decision.

    Hi Alex

    Thanks for the reply.

I have tried searchin many forums regarding the Nexus ports but to no avail.

Anyway would u have any experience with image blooming?

My supplier told me that the smaller diameter of the ZP1017 port causes it.

Hi, I am no expert but have a nexus housing with the FP160 and also contemplating the Tonkina 10-17 and have also been advised that this port will do the job also worth remembering that this port (as I have been advised) is suitable for use with 10.5 and 12-24 nikon lens respectively. As to extension ring lens length and whether you need diopters I am still in the dark, as I am getting conflicting opinions from 'my supplier' and generous wetpixel contributors. Might try and find out for myself....

Let me know how you go would be interested to hear back.

    cheers

  5. I use the FP170 dome without extension and get good results with the Tokina 10-17 on a Nikon D200.

  6. I have done extensive tests with the Tokina 10-17, 160mm 170mm and 230mm domes. The best result by far was the 230mm then 160 then 170. The 160 was better than the 170 despite being a smaller dome because it is a section dome and not a hemispherical dome like the 170 so the portion of the dome the lens looks through actually has less curvature than the 170 hemispherical.

In my tests I was mainly concerned with edge distortion, what is blooming?

If your supplier is telling you the 1017 port has a smaller diameter than the 160mm then I would stay away from it.

    My 230mm dome also works very well with my 16mm 20mm 24mm 35mm 12-24mm 60mm.

    Hope this helps

  7. Im using the Tokina 10-17 in the 160 dome and it works perfect.

Im also using the dome with 10,5 mm.

I have tested it with the 12-24 mm and 40 mm extension ring and had problems with soft edges. i have not sorted out that problem yet.

  8. The Divervision website states the Nexus Fisheye Port ZP1017 is a 119mm dome, made specifically for the 10-17. The rep at Reef claims it works great and allows wonderful lightly for close focusing work.

BUT.. who is using the Nexus Fisheye Port ZP1017?

  9. Hi,

I have both ZP1017 & 160 dome. The 160 dome is much sharper in corner.

  10. Since my response a year ago, I have begun using a 20mm extension with the 170 nexus port and I find improved results compared to no extension.

  11. So the FP160-6 dome works with no extension?

do you use a diopter? and If so, which one both in strength and brand?

Or is it ready to go with just the 160 dome?

For Tokina 10-17, you only need a 20mm extension with FP160 dome.

  13. Just completed my first dives with the 10-17mm using FP170 dome & 20mm ext ring. Very satisfied with results. As mentioned the custom port is probably the best choice, but if you already have the 170 then use it, since it also works with other lenses like 12-24mm (+4 diopter sharpens corners).

    Hej Lasse,

Mea cupa, I did not mention that I use the Nikkor 12-14 in the 170 dome port with a 40 mm PE AND a + 4 diopter (B+W brand). No diopter is required for the Sigma 17-70.

Another wetpixeler uses a +4 diopter with the 12-24 in the 170 dome but I have no experience with it.

hello all. i'm new in this forum.i have 1 quition how about the nexus NF10 for nikon 10.5 fisheyes.will it work with tokina 10-17 fish eye. thank

Run this thru the Google translator. Most Nexus info is there - just may have to look around a little.

They also show using the 10.5 with the 160 port, but custom 10.5 port is only for that lens. Someone may have tried other combinations, but haven't heard of other options.

  18. For Tokina 10-17, you only need a 20mm extension with FP160 dome.

Now I'm really confused as my distributor is telling me that the FP-160 doesn't need an extension to use the FP-160

Is Nexus a Japanese word for "we are going to drive you insane"?

It might be time we created a table on here showing what Nexus ports and extensions for different lens

You plan to spend more on a camera housing than most people in the world earn in a year. You hope to ride onto the ocean and find sharks. Then you plan to jump out of a perfectly good boat into that ocean of sharks with hopes of getting within a meter of a large shark so you can take his picture while he is showing his teeth.

Then you plan to post it on this and other websites so other insane people can say... ahhh.. he is like us -good job.

The insanity started WAY before you started talking to that distributor. :D

  20. For Tokina 10-17, you only need a 20mm extension with FP160 dome.

Is the extension really necessary? I expect it to sharpen the edges a little, but is it really needed?

With regard to the custom dome, the similar custom dome (FP 120-7) for the Nikon 10.5mm is truly spectacular, tho' very small. With an extension (still on order) I think that the FP 120-7 dome will work with the 10-17mm, though matching any zoom lens to a dome is a compromise if the optical centre moves during zooming. This compromise is best when the dome has a large radius, like the FP 170, but the large domes are unwieldy and often acrylic: the small domes are very handy, and optical glass. I don't have any experience with the glass FP 160 dome.

Like all Nexus gear, it's really hard to get hold of a dome or even an extension ring in Europe and the USA at the moment.

All frustrations fade away when a Nexus housing is submerged, but, oh boy, on the surface....

    Tim

    :D

PS MCD (link ->) have a table of Nexus domes, but it's about 5 years out of date...
