What would you buy?

  1. Well,

I have sold my Phenom las weekend, and in some days, the camcorder is going to fall into someone else hands.

At the moment, I am heading towards the V1E in the Endeavour housing, so I hope I can read Drew's report before order it. :glare:

Anyhow, I would be curious, how was working this rear mounted LCD? Was it comfortable to use? Or it is better to buy a housing with the SD monitor on the back and a separate HD monitor? Or it just makes bigger drag underwater?

    Jules

The XDCAM would be better, but I am afraid, that the housings will be avalaible only next summer, and I need a solution much earlier.

  2. Should be out anytime now Gyula.

You know there's also Canon! :)

Okay, I will refresh the main page every 5 minutes :)

Well, Canon has a big advantage with the SDi output... However the G1 costs significantly more...

On a production level, I have to ask.... why are you still looking at PAL for HD? Doesn't europe now just use 720p/25 or 1080i/50? And even though 25P is supported by HD- DVD (but not Blu-Ray ...well technically it is but not without work). Isn't it better to have a camera that does 24/25p and 50/60i like the Z1 or Canon XH?

Depending on your distribution of course. I haven't followed the EBU in a while so can't be too sure of what they've decided on now.

  6. I haven't dove with it yet, so I can't comment on the issue of drag, but I I like my top mounted monitor. I can tilt and swivel it in any direction. This will help me frame shots that would be impossible with a fixed rear mounted viewfinder or monitor.

    Hi Drew,

you are making me busy reading the specs of the Canon Xh-G1...

Well, my outputs are mainly: 1. SD-DVD (PAL), 2. Internet (flash, prog.scan), 3. HD-DVD or blue-ray? Open question.

  8. Another questions

    Drew:

The V1 site says, that it records to tape in 50i. During capture it makes again 25p. Does it mean at also, that if I put a tape (taken by the Z1 in 50i), it will play out as progressive picture?

    Ron:

If I am right, you have the Endeavour with the SD back AND an external HD monitor? Is it possible to connect both at at same time?

    Thanks,

    Jules

  9. You'll have to check with Amphibico if they can do a SD rear monitor and HD top monitor at the same time.

I have a Gates which has window for the viewfinder. Although it is not magnified, it is right up next to the window. I find the viewfinder very usable. I bought the top mounted external HD monitor as an add on to help get shots when the using the viewfinder is not possible.

Here are 2 sample pics. I used my HV10 to take footage of my FX7 inside the Gates, then did a video screen capture in Vegas.

  10. Well, gents,

I decided, and I bought today a V1E. After making some text, it seems to be a good decision, the live capture via component out, and the recorded footage played back via the component output to Apple Prores 4:2:2 in progressive 1080p25 is quite good. I must buy a HDMI to HD-SDI converter to use the full digital transfer chain. The only question is the housing.

Jules, sorry I missed this thread so I guess it's a little late to answer these questions.

The progressive scan signal (1080p 24/25/30) is recorded into the 1080i data stream as an interlaced signal. I think you have Final Cut Pro so all you have to do is capture it as 1080i but remove the interlace field option and it'll be 25P. And no, playback is all in interlaced. Only HDMI is in P-scan mode.

I also remembered you shoot topside. Be careful of the artifacting blocking on the V1 with busy scenes(like the surface of the sea). The Canon XH HDV codec somehow is better for those kind of scenes for whatever reason.

Also with the V1, there is rolling shutter effect to consider, especially for faster pans for subject tracking.

  12. Thanks Drew.

I captured as 1080i25 with my AJA Kona Lhe, the sequence was set to Apple prores 1080p25. I imported the footgae into Shake. Compared to the "old" Z1 footage, the difference is very big, I ilke the prog. scan :)

    Other:

I just talked to Amphibico. Since the camcorder could outout in only one mode (1080i or SD), the monitor can not be used at the same time.

    Jules

  13. Jules are you going to get 1 ? HD rear monitor I imagine. I think Wags said Amphibico made a limited number of housings and that's it.

    Where's Drew's review ?

  14. Thanks Drew.

What you are seeing is 4:2:2 color space and much more bandwidth with Prores. If you think you're going to get that off the tape... sok szerecset(sp?). :)

Ron it's out of my hands but should be online very soon... and why do you care? You already have the camera and housing :)

  15. Yes there is only a limited number of housings and word is they are half gone allready.

The HD 16.9 monitors are really good, 70 min dive today on the EVO with it on all the time.

Can be abit hard to see in the shallows due to sun but you can keep everything framed still.

Macro was good, the monitor would let you know if things were in focus or not.

Make sure you get 2500 ma NiNH AA's for them though.

I'll load up a 1280/720 wmv clip of what I shot today.

Yeh come on Drew....we are all waiting..ha ha... :)
