  1. If they are shark marks then polishing probably isn't an option. I do have one question, however: How much of a crop is the shot you posted? Or, is it taken with a zom lens? If that is full frame with a Sigma 15mm (assuming you're using the lens Dave said he located for you) then the marks must be pretty big. I have a couple scuffs in my S&S 9" dome but they don't normally show up. If they do, I can usually use the clone tool to clean things up. Since I don't tend to spend much time editing the pictures that aren't keepers, it doesn't take all that long to touch things up in Photoshop. YMMV.

    Hi Mike,

Its with my sigma 15mm the 2 marks are about the size of peas. I have been clone stamping them out on my keepers. They dont show up all the time I would say about 1/2 the time. If they are in the blue water part of the image its a breeze to clone stamp them out. If they are on the reef or 1/2 on one thing and 1/2 on another its more of a pain in the a*s but with care looks ok.

The thing that irks me is that he sold me the port and told me YOU WILL NEVER SEE THESE IN THE IMAGES and when you can see them he just blew me off. I don't get it you think he would be concerned with this kind of bad press??? Also if he would have been responsive he would have had a repeat buyer over many years

I don't think it is unreasonable to expect vendors to stand by there products. Anyway I have spent way to much time on this and dont have the time to sit around polishing the dam thing.

    Thanks

OK, so you cropped the photo to show the marks, then? I only ask because I saw one of your photos (the angelfish photo) in the "Best shots of 2007" section and if the marks were truly as big as the ones in the photo you posted at the head of this thread, then I'd definitely laud your Photoshopping ability on that angelfish shot! In any case, despite what I said, it certainly couldn't hurt to try a bit of polishing. I've had decent luck using fine grit sand paper, then using plastic polish to finish the job. Keep in mind, however that you may not get rid of them completely. Very few of us out there shooting with acrylic domes that DON'T have some scratches and scuffs -- kinda comes with the territory. Actually now that I think about it, people keep telling me to get my dome polished more often -- I thought it was because they thought I was too uptight :)

    Mike

  3. I think I need to get my dome polished more often as well. :) any chance I could make matters worse with the sand paper as I am not the handy kind :)

Sure, it's possible to make it worse! You have to take it slow and be careful. You first use the sandpaper (fine grit!) or emory cloth. It will look like crap after that. Next you need to have some plastic polish. The kits come with three or more "grits". Follow the directions on how to rub it in. You'd start with the roughest one and polish, polish, polish until the sandpaper marks are gone and there is just a hazy look left. Next you use the fine goo and polish, polish, polish. The dome will go back to clear. Finally, they offer a finishing polish. I don't bother most times but I guess it helps even more. Google "NOVUS plastic polish" and you should get some good info on how to use it. You might also search wetpixel for some threads on this. I know it comes up every so often and there are others better at this than me.

My ex girlfriend had a bike accident and totally scratched up her plastic watch/HRM. I was able to use this method to remove some awfully bad road scapes. Not perfect, but she didn't have to buy a new one. I also use this method routinely on my acrylic fish tank.

Again, YMMV. Hard to tell how deep the bites are from the picture.

    Mike

  5. They are about 1/32 " deep. Thats allot of polishing :) What fish do you keep ? I have a reef tank at home

  6. That 8" dome look like the early Ikelite type, these where made using older discontinued Aquatica A3 dome, but basically its still an Aquatica under that label :) and that means if you don't care much for elbowing your dome back to its original sheen, then the metal mounting flange can be refitted with a new acrylic dome, its way cheaper than buying a complete new unit and maybe an honourable exit for both party.

If that sound's like a plan for you guy's PM at jean@aquatica.ca and i'll try to make both of you guys looking good.

Both of you look like you did the effort to be honest, and as happen once in a while in the business world the proverbial crap hit the celebrated fan. Time for both of you to take a look at the situation and find a solution.

Glad you're here, I have a real problem with my new housing. I spent all that money on a new Aquatica housing, and most of my pictures still suck! What do you mean, it can't take the pictures for me? I want a full refund and a free photo trip! :)

Suggestion to moderators, if you're reading: how about a new feedback thread under the Classified section, for both positive and negative comments? Might help to keep disputes from blowing up all over the forum (or at least give us non-voyeurs a chance to avoid). Would also help folks who do sell here to build a public track record.

If anyone bought anything from WP's Classifieds, one can always post on the classifieds ad and state the happy or sad or dissatisfied ending. This way, it's transparent to both parties. Then all a person has to do is use the SEARCH function to check on the seller's previous deals.

It doesn't prevent fraudsters from changing user names, but WP offers the classifieds as a convenience and certainly isn't WPbay. Caveat Emptor is always a good approach on ANY online purchase.

  11. Jean from Aquatica has made a very kind offer. For $ 150 he will replace the marked dome. I am putting out to Dave that we split the the cost of shipping and the dome and shake hands. Wadda you say Dave ?

    Thanks

AH my poor friend, you should have taken the super duper special package, you know the one where you pay a bunch of extra cash and get the Technical Adviser (moi :) ) on a trip to Indonesia with you to show you a few pointers on photography and mainly how to work on a suntan and prepare fancy drinks with umbrella in them :) , really I swear it a once in a life time offer not available trought your normal retailler and as not advertised on TV.

If I wanted to know how to PREPARE fancy drinks with umbrellas on them, I'd be a bartender. I just want to know how to order them. :)

p.s. you also responded to a question of mine sent via email several days ago - I never said thanks directly but since you post here - thanks! :)

  16. Well folks, it look like Joe and David have come to a friendly solution. :)

  17. Just wanted to say that Dave and Myself have come to an agreement about the dome thanks to Jean from Aquatica .

Now I have to learn how to use dang the thing :)

  18. JD,

My name is Phil Rudin and I have known David since 1990 when we took a week long underwater photography course in West Palm Beach. Since that time we have remained in touch over the years and we also have many colleagues in common in the underwater photography industry. Not once in seventeen years has any of those who know David had a nagative comment regarding his business dealings. It would not be an understatement to say that his reputations as an Ikelite dealer is first rate.

The reason people buy from David, Ryan Canon and others and not from B&H is because of that additional service and time they are willing to provide. David and Ryan are both more passionate about underwater photography than they are about profit or they would not be doing what they do to begin with. David has made countless posts in these and other fourms in an effort to educate and inform without regard to profit margin.

The photo evidence you have provided here has not convinced me that the problem is restricted to the bite marks and not somthing that was on the inside of the dome.

You had a chance to handle this in private rather than in an open fourm and I feel that David did the right thing in becoming involved here. I think it will be your loss not having David as a resource rather than his for not having you as a client.

    Phil Rudin

  19. Phil, read the last two posts prior to your's. Please

Event such as theses do and will happen on occasion, no matter how well intentionned the buyer and/or the seller are. its a lesson i learned all the way back when I was a kid from my rinky dinky 5 cents lemonade stand on the curb side.

Bottom line is : no communication = no solution.

    Next post please !
