In fact by the end of 2008 i will be making that jump. But here are some images taken with a G7/ike hou/ikeDS51 , some are without strobe, some with the short port and Ikelite wide angle lens. I dont think shaprness or cabability of the camera is an issue at all.

The honey comb moray is with the wide angle/short port/DS51 strobe. The nudi is with the normal port/macro/DS51 strobe. The last one is without stobe.

    Cheers and good luck,

    Hi Guys

    Am I missing something!

Most divers seem to be considering a G9 v Nikon 5100 and having made up my mind on the G9 a couple of days ago before doing much research because 'everyone is buying a G9' mainly because I didnt fancy the evaluation.

Still looking at peoples images inc Islandbound on this thread and on various sites I haven't seen a really sharp image yet. They seem to be a bit soft and certainly are not as good as the images I get above water from my Panasonic FZ20.

Combine my concerns about image quality and add lack of wide angle then it seems like I am back on the merry go round of camera hunting.

I have just about given up with this P & S market and think I will have to bite the bullet and go DSLR.

    Any ideas?

    regards

    Ardy

  2. Hi Matt - what a shock, the images are very sharp without signs of software sharpening (Is this true?). In fact they are as good or better than I can get with expensive Nikon glass and top end Velvia 50 film.

Also your portfolio in total is of a very high quality - well done. This gives me some hope that I can get a P&S system without breaking the bank and more importantly not going too far backwards in terms of flexibility and quality.

BTW what has the total investment in your set up been?

Has there been a drop off in image quality between the p5000 and the 5100 as all the reviews don't give the 5100 a great write up in terms of image quality?

    Hi Diggy good photo's.

Have a look at Matts stuff from his p5000 (previous entry in this thread) it is really good.

May still look at a DSLR but Matt has given me some hope for a solution that suits me.

    regards

  3. HI Ardy

Thanks for your kind words. :D

the images are very sharp without signs of software sharpening (Is this true?).

most of the images have minimul post post processing including sharpening. the wide angle shots even less.

This gives me some hope that I can get a P&S system without breaking the bank and more importantly not going too far backwards in terms of flexibility and quality.

i think that P&S cameras can get very good quality images ,but you must have strobes & wide angle or macro wet lenses to make this possible . the shutter delay when shooting supermacro (3xinon lenses) is slower and does require a method which takes a while to perfect but with practice you can shoot nudi head shots .

the no shutter lag on DSLR would be nice , but then you have the issues of lense & port changes and the cost$.

[/i]BTW what has the total investment in your set up been?

mm not shure ,,Probally all up about 3K? including camera, housing, inon wide & macro lenses, inon strobe , & stuff some of the stuff i had already . eg ULCS arms and 1 inon strobe

Has there been a drop off in image quality between the p5000 and the 5100 as all the reviews don't give the 5100 a great write up in terms of image quality?

i dont think IQ has changed much just 2 more MPs & and perhaps a bit quicker??? , i had also read the reviews on thr P5000 , but after playing with it in a camera store i decided to buy. to me some reviews a bit confusing , too much information . in real use i find the P5000s IQ very good and i can get images that do everything i want , ( post on the net , print up a few shots to give as gifts and put on my wall , and enter the od photo comp)

from what i have seen the IQ on the G7 is very good also , either would be a good choice .im happy with my P5000

    Regards

    Matt
