I'm leaving for Cocos the 2nd week in Jan. and my wife has actually suggested I look to see if I could upgrade from my D200 to a D300 and get it housed in time for the trip...(I was stunned, and then I found it it's partially because she's looking at some designer clothing that would be about the equivalent cost...)
I'll end taking my D200/Aquatica set up anyway, and I can get a D300 camera in time (if I can find a housing).
Does anyone know if there is a manufacturer that will have shipping D300 housings by late Dec/early Jan?
I've read about the modifications to get a D300 into a D200 housing - I'm not really looking for that - I'd like to see if I can get my hands on a D300 housing (any brand at this point) before this trip...
Thanks,
- Matt

Sea & Sea and Nexus claims Dec release. How soon it gets into the open market may be a different story. I would not hold my breath for early Jan given shipping times. The sea & sea offering looks amazing. Check Wetpixels news reports from the DEMA show in Orlando....SnS were the only ones with a D300 prototype on show.
My guess - and this is purely a guess - is that the Ikelite housings will be the first available. However, Nexus also tends to be pretty quick too - because I think they have a good relationship w/ Nikon.
Whatever you do, get on some preorder list soon or you'll NEVER get a housing in time.
Cheers

It seems that Hugyfot is on start with a housing for the D300,
a short info from Andy Voeltz who is a german Hugyfot distributor.

aquatica was the first to deliver the d200 housings, it will be interesting to see who will win this race. You should check with reef photo or uwphoto they would know availability
Ikelite updated their site today.
They are taking pre-orders and expect to ship before Christmas.

That's great! I just got my D-300 this week and would love to have a housing available for my holiday trip to Kauai. I guess I'll have to try to find someone who can ship one to me by Dec 20th. I bought my last housing from Reef Photo, but I wonder if there is a long pre-order queue already?

I'm staring at a quote from Hugyfot stating a shipping date on week 51.

Subal have just told me they anticipate February 2008 for their ND30 housing. Yeah!
The new MDX-D300, MDX-40D and MDX-MARKIII housings will be available in the US in mid-January in limited quantities with full deliveries beginning in February along with the MDX-D3.
oh those are some perty housings S&S . Can you tell us more about the new "MDX" materials used for these new housings? Thought I heard somewhere that they will be lighter than the previous alu housings.
Seatool's D300 should be out soon too....although I am not sure it will make your deadline. I have used Subal's for my D70 & D200 but am going to take a hard look at the Seatool for my D300. With its compact size I am pretty sure it will fit my carry on and I like the idea of firing my strobes w/ fiber optics. Sync cords are a pretty weak link. There is also an adaptor so I can use my Subal ports. If I don't like it....a Subal ND30 (?) it will be.

HI Pakman, the MDX series are machined out of solid block aluminum for a lighter weight housing and higher tolerances than a cast housing such as the D200. Also, the ergonomics are drastically enhanced, LCD window is A/R coated on the inside to help with reflections while using live-view, etc. Thanks
Improved ergonomics ... I'm loving the 40D housing in that the shutter speed dial is right next to the shutter unlike the old 350D and 5D housings where it was on top and a bit far from your finger tips.

Yes that is the main dial adjustment knob.

Thanks for the update. Can you provide us with the measurements of the housing for the D300? I was wondering how much bigger it will be comparing with my current housing the S&S DX350.
Thanks

HI Nuno, currently that information is not available, but from hands on experience with the housing over several days it is very similar to the 350D, 400D, D80.

Thanks for the info. I was trying to calculate approx size using scales from photos I saw and indeed the size looked similar but wanted to confirm.

Hi
More questions for sea&sea...
¿MDX-D300 with built-in TTL converter like 400D housing or compatible with converter III?
The MDX series housings - D300, 40D, MKIII, D3 will all be compatible with the Nikon and Canon TTL converter III's. They will not feature a built-in TTL circuit.
