Canon 1Ds Mark III full-res image

  1. Hey guys. I just put this image online for full-res download:

    echeng080207_0150838.jpg

(click image to download. 28.4MB LZW-compressed 8-bit tif, ProPhoto color space)

When you get to the download page, click on "Request Download Link" at the top -- it's easy to miss.

It's not a fantastically wonderful image, but it will show a typical example of what the camera can do at ISO 250, underwater. You'll have to excuse me -- the full-res image is rather obnoxiously watermarked. :D

I would have taken some more macro shots, but I didn't bring a macro setup to the Revillagigedos. Frank Baensch lent me his 100mm macro for one dive, and I took some fish portraits (including this one) through a superdome.

    Shot details:

    Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III

    EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

    Seacam underwater housing

    2 x Ikelite DS-125 strobes

    f9 @ 1/125 sec, ISO 250

Converted using CaptureOne v4 (since Aperture doesn't support the camera yet. Boo!!)

The file host I'm using may delete the file after a few months, or at anytime, really.

  2. And here is a photo of Eric in action with the new camera. I am sorry I don't have a more close up shot - but there were rather more exciting subjects to photograph on the Wetpixel trip!

    eric_in_action.jpg

Anyway, from the outside the housing looks very similar to the previous Seacam 1D series housings - just with a massive LCD on the back. This is great news for anyone thinking of upgrading as it will take no time at all to get used to it. All the main controls are exactly at your fingertips and of course all the controls worked faultlessly straight out of the box.

I saw some of Eric's wide angle shots at 100% on the trip and they were stunning. 21MP of goodness. I was very impressed with the image quality at ISO 400 at 100%. Although Eric said he was important that you nailed the exposure to make the most of it at the higher ISOs.

10.5.2 was released with 1DS MkIII Aperture support last night.

For some reason I'm not seeing the file.

  4. 10.5.2 was released with 1Ds Mk III support last night, but not 1Ds Mk III support for Aperture. I installed it and confirmed that Aperture support is not there yet. People are complaining in the Apple forums already...

Click on "Request Download Link" after you click through to the link. It's easy to miss, but it's pretty much the first thing on the page.

    Here are a couple more:

    echeng080208_0151226.jpg

Manta ray at El Boiler, San Benedicto

Shot details: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Sigma 20mm/1.8 lens, Seacam underwater housing, 2 x Ikelite DS-125 strobes, f7.1 @ 1/200 sec, ISO 200

... and here's one of Mustardini:

It was a great trip. :D

Oh, and here's a 500x333 pixel crop from the image of Alex:

And now, I am going to sleep. :excl:

  5. I'm not seeing the link as well to the full res file? just getting the main MiHD upload page. Do you need to accept cookies?

  6. Hi Michael,

The link is at the top of the page - it looks like a title, rather than a link!

Looks like Aperture 2.0 fixes that

This is an OK, shot. Wait to you see some of the others people got on this trip. Absolute stunners.

    Alex

  10. Eric, you cut off the tail..

  11. (now i will get crap for my internet.. :D)

I do not think anyone would do that, because you really do not have internet :excl:

If it makes you feel better my connection timed out also on cable modem :D

  12. Hey Eric,

I think I just missed you getting on and off the Solmar V. Our trip was a bit slower than in December when we saw whalesharks, but still pretty amazing with mantas on every dive, 20-30 dolphins at Cabo Pearce, and hammerheads at Roca Partida. We heard whales at the Boiler so loud it rattled our eardrums, but didn't see any whales. Did they showed up for you? Looking forward to seeing more pics.

  13. So has *anyone* downloaded the file? Maybe I should just stick it up on Wetpixel.

Got it earlier today (right after my post to Mike) but have not been around. The second time the connection did not time out and really did not take that long. Looks good, but I did not see the watermark you mentioned :D

The crop of Alex also was real impressive in its detail.

  15. So has *anyone* downloaded the file? Maybe I should just stick it up on Wetpixel.

I was able to download but it took almost an hour with our relatively poor internet connection here in the bush. How do you like the Sigma 20?

    Tom

  16. I love the Sigma 20/1.8. I find it works best with a P30 extension (30mm). In many of my shots on the last trip, I was using Bruce's 25mm extension, which I think was too short. (I was using it for some other reason and was too lazy to swap it out...)

AF not too noisy or slow? - have read complaints.

    Tom

PS. looking forward to your Seacam & Mark III review!

  18. AF not too noisy or slow? - have read complaints.

I use that lens on auto-focus with 45 points to shoot lemon snaps at the surface. Very few images are out of focus! No complaints from me.

OK, here's another one. It's a high-res of Calum, from the UK.

Download the hi-res image here (direct, this time).

  19. So has *anyone* downloaded the file?

tried 3 times but no luck, timed out each time.

  20. OK, direct download worked much better... :D
