Advice for upcoming diving

  1. Hey people,

am heading to the redsea in 10 days 9 hours and 43 minutes. I have my G7 in an ikelite housing and ds-51 strobe, first time i've had a chance to get it wet.

An advice on what settings are best.

Islandbound had a great thread with settings on it and some amazing photos but that seems to have vanished now.

I really don't want to miss a shot.

And shock horror i've not insured it, almost forgot any advice on who and how i can do it quickly ONLINE, am stuck in iraq working so communication is a problem!!!

    Cheers guys x ;)

  2. I insured my setup with DEPP. American company. Can't remember their details, but you can do it all over the net.

As for settings, for a start, try sticking your strobe on eTTL, and shoot in AV mode. Adjust your appature to control depth of field and the amount of light entering the camera. The macro mode works well, so flick that on if you're real close to something.

The other option would be to shoot in TV mode, but personally I like to do it the other way.

Hope you enjoy the trip, and looking forward to seeing some pics when you get back!

  3. hmmm av mode have heard people talking about this and how the effects and picture are better, but my own results have been poor, perhaps someone could explain it better to me?

  6. Grab a copy of Michael Aw's book 'An Essential Guide to Digital Underwater Photography'. You'll learn a lot from it, has been an invaluable guide to me. Will give you something to read on the plane trip too.

A basic rundown though, for macro, use f8 with macro setting on. Strobe on eTTL, and play around with the position of it.

For WA, I tend to start with f5.6, and adjust it accordingly.

Basically the smaller your appature (higher number), the greater the depth of field, but also means less light entering the camera.

  7. Ryan,

Thanks for the advice. I'm taking my setup (same as yours w/o the WA) out for the first time down the gulf coast of FL into the keys. The previous discussion between you and Islandbound (the one that dissapeared) was part of the reason I bought the camera/housing/DS-51 strobe. I'm pretty excted. Thanks for reposting what you did and I'll likely pick up the guide as well. Great gallery by the way,

  9. Thanks Kristin. I'm still really happy with this setup, a good 12 months after I bought it. The WA lens is great, if you're diving anywhere in relatively clear water, I'd definately get one. One of my pet hates with most modern P&S cameras is their lack of WA.

I'm still hopnig to get a second strobe (DS-125) before a planned trip to Vanuatu in July, but we'll see how funds go. I'm getting a desperate for a macro lens too, might pick one of these up next week. We've just had a terrible summer for diving here, but it's starting to change for the better now, so plan on spending most weekends in the water.

Any other questions, feel free to PM me.

    Ry.
