You have an important task ahead of you. After my son Jeff beat me senseless in the Bonaire Shootout (he won a new strobe, I got a tee-shirt) I called for a rematch and we stayed over for one more day of diving. We decided to make our own personal photo contest fair we would try to capture an image of the same critter and let you be the judge. Below you will find two images of juvenile trunkfish. (Dice fish according to The RealDrew )
The rules of the poll are simple, chose your favorite image and check the box. Both images were taken the same day, on the same dive, different fish. I had the 40D while Jeff used the 400Xti. To make it fair I gave him my 250's and I used the 110's. Feel free to let us know why you like your choice.
Have fun!
Steve's "Dice fish"
Jeff's Dice fish
Thanks for your help!
How about a draw? The top one is a better composition, the bottom one is a crisper, more in focus shot. So you need an official draw button. But hey for little floating balls in the water they sure are tough to shoot so both get high marks for eye contact.
#2 wins, mainly because #1 is sort of disqualified for being too out of focus. Also prefer the background in #2
Hi all!
Steve's "Dice fish"
Jeff's Dice fish
Thanks for your help!
Sadly I must recuse myself from the selection process due to the fact I love Dice Fish too much to ever pick a favorite
Sorry Stevie,
I don't like Jeff's background very much,
but at least his target is in focus. . . YOU LOSE.
HTH,
Bruce...
It is obvious that you were shooting the christmas tree worm, so you get points for focusing on the less obvious subject! With age comes wisdom! If you are in need of other defenses against the clarity of youth, feel free to contact me.

LOL! Thanks for all the comments guys. It's my humble contention that I more accurately represent the blurred reality and detail of the little guys spots. Actually, the little red focus spot was right on top of his eye. Maybe I need to sharpen more or something. I thought about having Bonnie PS in a nudibrach.
Anyway keep those votes coming. The loser "has" to attend Alex's workshop in Grand Cayman in Jan. B)

O.K., let me get this straight. the "LOSER" has to attend the workshop???? Can I enter the contest? I have some real beauties... go head to head with you, since I'm not too busy in January. I would be a gracious loser and readily admit defeat as I pack my bags for cayman.
If that won't work,... your image is terrible! it positively pongs! It hurt my eyes just looking at it!
Safe travels, Steve.

Yes no kidding. I have plenty of blurry box fish butts which would lose hands down.

I am not quite sure how the word loser is defined in your neck of the woods Steve, but if that is what losers suffer through, I am moving out your way
As to the others who are trying to muscle in with their bad Dice Fish photos, save it. I am already admitting defeat to save time and effort.
Hi Steve ,
Nice try, but no cookie - Jeff wins. I would blame the Mask of Satan! (It was on this shoot wasn't it?)
Cheers
Hal
Within three minutes my eyes had swollen completely shut and the tears were running constantly. I couldn’t see a thing. Halfway to the pier, after a few attempts at rinsing and clearing I finally took it off completely and tried to wash out my eyes and clean the unholy vapor emanating from mask. Thinking this had to clear up, right? We kept going toward the pier and the great images I knew were there. Luckily the sun was still low to the horizon so I could make progress toward the pier by keeping the glimmer on my left shoulder. Jeff was right there keeping me headed in the right direction and probably thinking his old man had finally lost it. “Why is he diving without his mask?†Another ten minutes and 1000 psi later I sensed the darker area under the pier. With my mask back on we setup for the shots we had discussed. It was completely fogged by the way. Through the barely open eye slits I could just make out areas of light and dark, no hope of focusing or even making out sponges on the large pilings. I just shot by instinct, knowing Jeff was circling into the frame as we had talked about.
the top one looks like it was taken by "the old guy" that needs glasses!

OK, before we get an age discrimination thing going here I submit further proof. Here is a 1:1 zoom crop in lightroom of the same little guy different shot. Check out the fins and the mouth. Pretty good focus right? Checkout his spots, I can't help it if the poor little guy was born with blurry spots.
Sorry guys, family members only in this competition, and yes Hal this important contest was held the two days after my mask fiasco. I was using my backup so no excuses there.
Steve
Since I'm an old guy that needed glasses to see the diference, I stand by it

Hello everyone, I really don't think we are giving dad's shot a fair chance, the composition really is beautiful. He was also hindered because he was using my strobes that day (twin ys-110s) while I had his monster ys-250s. I certainly think that affords him a slight handicap. In light of the recent naming of the "losing" prize, I really think we should give it another look. If I don't see a change in the results, I may have to forfit.
Thanks for your comments,
Jeff
Sorry Jeff,
But no 'dice'...hehehe
Have a look at the second pic he lodged, it's worse than the first...
Stevie,
I think that your moniter is calibrated for your vision,
I think that your moniter needs its eyes checked...
Pack your bags baby, you're on your way to Cayman...
Can you imagine poor old Alex trying to sort this lot out...hehehe
Bruce...
I'm torn. I want the winner to go to the workshop. LOL
I smell a rat (maybe dead fish) here! Are you sure your RAW image was out of focus? I think you may have blurred it purposely knowing the loser goes to Cayman. Maybe the RAW should be submitted to Alex to see whether he will allow you to go to Cayman. Yes, this whole thing stinks a little.

Age & guile vs. youth and innocence. B)
I think the will of the judges has been made clear. Jeff takes home the trophy! Congratulations.
I on the other hand am clearly in the most need of help. I think it's logical that in this case we should give the loser a chance to catch up in this unbalanced, ongoing, friendly competition between father and son. I also want to thank all of you who voted, I especially, appreciated your kindness.
I agree that Alex will have his hands full but I'm confident he can rise to the challenge.
