What do you get if you cross a bicycle and a broom?

  1. So Jeff, have you had your housing modified? Did Reef Photo do it?

Ryan has made me a USB to Nikonos bulkhead for the third bulkhead on the Subal; hope to have it in the next few days. I have a 25 foot Nikonos cord that will go out of the pool and of course then a short Nikonos to USB connector for the laptop.

    Cool. What third bulkhead?

  4. The 5m maximum USB transmission distance specifications may well overcome these efforts, but I'm curious to hear if it does in fact work :D.

Good point; if necessary I'll get a shorter cable, probably only need about 5m. (I'll just make sure the laptop's secured to the table when I'm swimming around in the pool)

  6. You don't need to... you can use these:

I used their firewire cable extensions for capturing direct to laptop.

Thanks, this may sound like a dumb question but does it make any difference that this device will obviously be on the laptop side with the Nikonos cable between it and the housing?

  7. The instructions for use is on the webpage. I just reread about your N5 being 25ft long. That may be problematic.

    Oh, yes.

  9. Hi All

The only problem I see with using a laptop is being able to see the screen outside in the sunlight. What about using something like these personal viewing glasses. http://www.vuzix.com/iwear/products_av230xl.html. I haven't really looked into doing this but I'm sure it could be done.

  10. I think Alex will figure out a way to go wireless and bark commands to his intern through a headset from his room. Housed pocket wizards to trigger, a wireless camera monitoring from the viewfinder, housed wifi transmitter for the housing AND an intern who looks like Olga Kurylenko so none of the other straight guys will bother shooting. He'll need a bigger broom though. Wait! Has Alex gone D700?

Nah D3x - it is the new 'toy' for Cayman next week.

[Oh hell, I promised not to let that slip out - sorry Alex].

  12. Running the risk of dragging this off topic.

I have a D700. I got it last year and did update my website. Although since I have not dived with my one yet (for the Wetpixel review I borrowed one) it doesn't really feel like my camera. I have not done anything with it yet, so have not been able to post anything.

I was forced into upgrading because my D2X is on its shutter limit and with 6 weeks underwater in the next 7 I decided I needed something more reliable. I would have preferred a D3X, but I am not rich enough. I actually think that the D300 is a better UW all rounder to the D700. But the D300 is so similar to the D2X (except at higher ISO) that the D700 seemed to offer more new technology to explore photographically over my existing kit. The chance to expand the types of images in my portfolio. Plus with travel plans to do lots in the UK, Norway (where they catch both whales and fish) and Canada - a high ISO specialist seemed like fun for 6 months.

I'll be quids in if the D700x fits in the same housing, but I have a nagging doubt about that one.

Back to the intern - their job would simply be to follow the sharks with the pole cam - and I'd press the button at the right moment. Although, because Jeff is on my JASA Oceanic White Tip trip - maybe we can just use his housing!

Glad you only want the housing; I'm too old to be an intern, and I look like hell in a bikini!

  14. and I look like hell in a bikini!

If anyone can fix that, sure you can, Jeff.

LOL, so you justified the expense of a new camera because you were anticipating the breakdown of your present camera? I like that logic!

Jeff, I'm sure Alex wouldn't mind if you went topless... just make sure to write NWS on your head.

  16. Hi,

Patima has a different solution for data storage. They are using a housed commercial off-the-shelf PMP

as underwater monitor( tested at 120m deep) & storage device (19 Gb) for mainly underwater CCTV &

it can take signal(mpeg4,jpg etc) from d-slr to it and connector/cables were already developed. I will find

    more info shortly.

  17. I have a bar being built for my Aquatica and will mount a marine antennae to the top of it. Then screw the pole onto it. I have yet to see if a 40D or 50D will fit in the 20D housing as I would not need buttons to line up. Should have the bar this week.

    Cheers

  18. Great stuff Alex!

Like the DIY pole arm..simpel is usualy the best..low-tec ruels!

I too would love the pole job...but I also suffer from bad-bikini-look's.

Amazing shark shoots...superb lighting! what's your set up ??

    Keep up the good work!

    :)
