I just read on the B&H site that the Canon G9 has been discontinued. Can anyone confirm this? This would make sense since I just ordered a G9...:-/
I wonder what's next for Canon's flagship digicam?
Cheers

Not as much sense as me buying one two days ago for those times I did not want to carry an dSLR
Hmmm maybe I will go back and get a different camera, was considering housing this as an emergency back up...
EDIT: It was moved to the outlet section of Circuit City, was not there a couple of days ago, and the price has dropped another $25 or so since I bought it on Friday.
Boys,
Rumors are swirling of a G10, maybe just an interim jump with more MP, or possibly the first P&S model using Canon's CMOS sensor after the announcement a while back on a new plant being built for sensors. If it incorporates a CMOS sensor it COULD mean lower high ISO noise and hopefully faster AF especially with flash where both the G7 and G9 aren't the fastest. Most speculation says announcment around Photokina........Just like the Canon 5D MKII and 50D ![]()
The Canon G7 and G9 models can make spectacular photos so don't sweat it if you just got one. Explore the features and shoot away, especially with the built in IS that makes shooting at ISO200 or below possible a lot!
YMMV......... ![]()

I am pretty sure James will agree with me, we just guaranteed those features and it will also go to 28mm lens plus bake bread in the morning
Almost got an XSI instead since it is lighter and smalller than my 30Ds (about 1/2 pound lighter and smaller body size), but figured this was real nice and small
hmmmmm.
James, you're what's known in my business (investing) as a "contrary indicator" - let me know if you buy anything else and I'll immediately know it's time to sell! ![]()
I just bought one recently, too, mostly to use topside, but I also bought the OEM housing and some accessories to use occasionally uw when I don't want to lug around my big rig. It doesn't bother me that it's being discontinued - almost ANY camera is going to be replaced by a newer model within a year or so, and it'll probably take another 6 months after that for anybody to have a new uw housing on the market for the replacement anyway.
I continue to believe that cameras are like computers - you've gotta USE them to get your money's worth...the G9 seems to be an excellent little camera, and will serve me/you just fine for at least a year or two! ![]()
hey guys, need some opinions here for newbie/starter for UW camera. was pondering btw G9 and A720. of couse seems G9 is a better one but the price of A720 is more attractive.
can u guys pls share which model u'd get and why?
thx in advance.

Hey Jamesy,
You might consider doing some searching on this website on Canon cameras in the P/S and beginner areas. I have forgotten the thread listings but earlier this yr there were quite a few good threads on which Canon P/S to buy. Some owners were quite happy with lesser costing cameras as the OEM housing could have wide angle and close-up lens additions without modification.
The G9 requires a much more expensive housing (or you have to modify it significantly) to make wide angle work. I, of course, had already bought the G9, yada, yada, but like it so far. But no serious diving with it yet as I am FAR FAR from the ocean.. sigh...Come on, next dive trip!
Dave
You've just got to ignore the madness to have the latest, fastest, biggest... As a G9 owner I'm looking foward to the G12. The G10 and G11 can take a running jump... (unless the 50D tempts me first...)
I have a G9 and like it - but I don't like the housing options. But it's a great topside camera.
I already have a Fuji F30 and Fuji housing - along w/ an Inon 105AD lens - which won't work with ANY of the Canon G9 housing options...
Cheers
James
I love my G9 - especially with a speedlight 430EXII.
Here's what I would like to see in the successor:
*** 28mm equivalent at the wide-end
*** Widescreen 720p video
*** CMOS sensor (just wish ISO 400 was cleaner)
James - the Patima housing looks like a real winner to me - albeit not cheap ... if I had to do it all over again, I think I'd get the Patima. With their short port and the INON W/A adapter, you can shoot fully wide-open and you seem to get much sharper corners than with the Ikelite housing (which also requires a slight zoom to avoid vignetting).
I think if I was going to spend that kind of money I'd house a Rebel Xsi

G9 - $475
Patima - $900
W/A Adapter - $300
For under $2000 + strobes you are fully equipped for W/A and Macro on the same dive (plus you can shoot video).
How much would you have to spend on the whole XSi setup?
Hmm, it depends on the housing:
Canon Xsi w/ Kit lens: $700
Ikelite Housing: $1,100
Ports: $300
Tokina 10-17: $400
Total: $2,500

Wow - considering how much everyone seems to love that Tokina, it is a steal!
I think if one wants nice sharp wide angle stuff, the DSLR setup is totally worth that extra spend.
I think if one is primarily interested in macro, the G9/Ikelite/Inon combo offers pretty good value.
I'm a little bit disappointed with the W/A setup with the Ikelite, but the macro has exceeded my expectations.
Horses for courses... boys!
If you are looking for the best P&S option then you would go for the G9.
Remembering why you want the P&S option in the first place; being able to use both W/A and macro on the same dive.
If you are looking at breaking into DSLR, then you might chose the Rebel option, but not everyone considers the Ike housing to be confidence inspiring with that wonky port system of theirs...
What this argument does show, is the gap is narrowing between the affordability of P&S and housed DSLR systems.
Although, you still have to add a macro lens and port to James' system before it can compete equally with the G9.
With the quality of the P&S systems out there at the moment, I have seriously begun thinking about down grading to P&S.
And I only say "down grading" because of the size of the unit, NOT the quality!
IMHO...
Bruce...
Bruce, the G9 does not really offer the functionality of W/A and macro on the same dive unless used in the most simplistic manner, i.e short port / UWL-100.
I shoot macro / portraits with the long port which gives me the flexibility of the entire zoom range. Of course it is 'possible' to shoot macro with the short port but what would do I do with that big chunk of glass called a UWL-100 complete with the dome unit?
Nope, its a compact camera system which, IMO, needs to be approached from the perspective (and constraints) of a DSLR system...
I hear you Bruce - and I understand the want to be able to shoot macro and wideangle on the same dive AND have a small system. That's the thing about the G9 - because of its lens design, you can't effectively do both like you could w/ the Oly 5050 or the Coolpix 5000 or even more recent compacts.

James Wiseman
As usual the pixel race. I would love to have a Gxx camera back in 10-12MP range. At least the rumor has the lens in a decent range.
As for Xsi - we are biting the bullet and heading down that path.

James, are you talking about it being limited only because you need to buy wet lenses to add on? Or because of the two different port systems?
The short port stays on my G7, not matter where I am, as I feel having the flexibility between shooting wide angle and macro on the same dive is the biggest advantage of using a system like this.
Yes, it slightly limits the zoom range, but I've found it very hard to focus on macro subjects if it is overly zoomed in anyway. Diving locally, I will be prepared to shoot both WA and macro, and it's an easy swich by quickly taking off or putting on my WA lens.
And while I was looking at purchasing a macro lens, in the end I didn't feel it was necessary. I've often focussed on something only mm's away from the front of the port before with great luck.
While I am looking at housing my dSLR in the next month or so, I think I will really miss this at some of my local sites, where on a dive you will normally want to shoot both.
Ry.
