A question for American friends - Politics

  1. I posted this here because it's the only forum I subscribe to that has an American public.

Why don't you elect statesmen like Nancy Pelosi to be President instead of the succession of cowboys you seem to get landed with?

we try, but this is what happens: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discu...ress=203x508261

  3. Nancy Pelosi !? :P

  4. What Jeff said.

American presidents generally come out of the senate or from a governorship. Occasionally they serve as vice president first. The last president that served in the house but was not first a VP, senator or governor was Andrew Jackson (1828-32). Jackson killed the bank though and we could sure use that right now. Pelosi is no Andrew Jackson.

  5. Many's perception of Nancy Pelosi is that she is a left-wing nut who has an axe to grind. Too many Republicans hate her the worst kind of "San Francisco liberal" and too many Democrats think she's a loudmouth. And, independent of political beliefs, she wouldn't be high up on my list of "statesmen" -- not even sure I could think of one from either side anymore. Our presidential candidates are valued more for their ability appear (or be) "moderate" while still quietly pandering enough to the nether regions of their parties to get people to show up at the polls and raise money . . .

  6. I dont think the US presidents before Bush JR were too bad. Sure, they have their good and bad points, and you can be for or against them, but none has been so widely seen as completely incompetent as W. Even his father wasn't so bad. Inside the US Bush may still have some support, and maybe some loners in britain, but in the rest of the world he's pretty much seen as a huge douche bag idiot. It's such a shame because the US is still (as long as it lasts) economically a major player and vital to many parts of the world.

Im hoping the democrats will get back into power and the US can mend some deep wounds in their own country and abroad.

  7. Why don't you elect statesmen like Nancy Pelosi

Many reasons, although we could do worse. I had to turn the radio off during her speech. I was on the verge of throwing up when she starting praising Dodd and Frank, two people who were part of the problem. That's another story. Other than a couple of mis-steps, she's navigated the mine field pretty well over the course of her leadership. As Craig noted, she followed a different career path. For all practical purposes, we are two party system. As such, each party covers a broad and sometimes overlapping political spectrum. Not only that, each of the over 400 representatives have their own geographical and demographic agendas. Speaker of the House is best described as herding cats.

    succession of cowboys

This implies two or probably more in sequence. It's hard to view it that way. It would be like me lumping Thatcher, Major and Blair together. It takes a bit of hammering to get the pegs to fit one description.

  8. Americans think of W. as a "huge douche bag idiot" too. Even Texans do. As a long time Austinite, I can tell you that we knew that when he was first running for governor here. Despite winning Texas by a wide margin, W. lost in the urban areas. Austin, home to W. before he got in WAY over his head, voted for Gore. We knew he was an idiot.

The US's politics has been dominated recently by the creepy coalition of religious nutjobs and confederate flag-waving, racist hate-mongers. That combination doesn't like Pelosi too much. :P

I also agree with George regarding the cowboy comment. Who is the cowboy in this year's election? Who was the cowboy prior to W.? When was W. really ever a cowboy? Fact is, the real control has been in the hands of scumbags like DeLay, Rove, and Cheney. W. is just a retarded puppet. He wears a cowboy hat because that's the fashion where daddy set him up with his first oil money job. W. isn't sophisticated enough to be a cowboy.

Personally John, I think that you should know better. . . . :P

I sincerely hope that, where-ever he is, Eric jumps in here and closes this 'bastard' of a topic . . . .

If I want to read about bloody politics, I will buy a frigging newspaper. . . . :good:

    Bruce...

  10. Dunno it is kinda fun Bruce - as to if a broad spectrum of representative American or world opinion is expressed here - not sure, does it matter - not sure it does.

But the header does say The Galley: General Chat "Introduce yourselves, and chat about anything!" and this does comply to that.

John B knew there was going to be a hell of a bang when he pulled the pin out and chucked the grenade in the air - didn't you John :P

The problem is the best and the brightest don't get into politics ... they go to Wall Street - DOH! :P

  13. Personally John, I think that you should know better. . . . :P

you can choose not to open the thread... your choice

we choose not to censor on this board unless it gets into personal attacks.

  14. The interesting question is not the absence of Pelosi, it's the presence of Palin! Perhaps that's the cowboy John refers to.

  15. I added the word "politics" to the topic. We do allow off-topic stuff here in the Galley, but now you can read the topic and decide if you want to click on it or now. Before you just didn't know what you were getting into! :-)

    Cheers

    Bruce...

Bruce, the general chat forum is for any other topics not covered in the other sub forums. While I'm sure many like to think of Wetpixel as 'only' an UW photography forum , there are many topics broached including politics , especially in conservation and the environment. Those who have different (opposite) viewpoints are more than welcome to discuss it in a civilized manner. As Mike V suggested, if the thread offends your sensibilities, close it or read another one.

as I said, this is the only collection of intelligent Americans I know.)

Was that an asteistic statement, John? :)

  17. Was that an asteistic statement, John?

Could be seen as quite worrying - Bantin, you need to get out more.

Aw hell, you travel more than I do :P

Her 15 minutes is almost over.

  19. Why don't you elect statesmen like Nancy Pelosi to be President instead of the succession of cowboys you seem to get landed with?

She's a pretty good backroom operator and legislator (whose dad was an old-school Baltimore democratic mayor), but she's too liberal to ever get elected outside of her district.

I was really hoping Hillary and Rudy would get the nominations and then Mike Bloomberg would pick Obama as his running mate for a surprise 3rd party win ...

  20. JB FOR PRIME MINISTER :P
