  1. Hey Tristan,

dont know where u are heading in Egypt, when I was in Wadi Lahami (pretty far south) in 2006 there were alot of birds around the mangroves there. Had some nice encounters with fisheagles. Was happy that I had my 300 with me.

Perhaps u have could bring your 400 2.8

    have a good time,

That is a really sweet series you have going there, very nice indeed.

I am based in Sharm for the fortnight so fairly north in relation to Hurgada etc. I went to Taba with some friends last year and bought a little canon compact with a housing and used it whilst snorkeling so really got the bug then

I am trying to prevent Monarch from weighing my rucksack as it without trying to smuggle the 400 on as well in my hand luggage -_- I usually get a couple of 1dMkIIn 2 spare batteries,70-200 2.8, 24-70L, 1.4 xTC, laptop, spare hard drive, arctic butterfly 580ex, some spare AA cells, pocket wizards and off camera cords etc in my mini-trecker on a weekly basis and it weighs in at about 15Kg but I have only been asked to weigh it once as it looks so small and even then I managed to do the old switcheroo with my girlfriends rucksack, (which weighs nothing), so i was lucky.

Having assembled my Aquatica housing :) for the first time this morning I recon that I am pushing my luck as it is. :) even without the strobes, i think i'll just take a large jacket and fill it with strobes and lenses.. :) I recon I could also squeeze a 300 f4 with a 1.4 TC in a pocket somewhere

  2. If you follow all of this advice, then the key component of your system will be the credit card for your excess baggage bill....

You are not kidding, last year when the no cabin luggage ban was in force, my XS bill was over £13,000 for the year  However with some creative packing I hope to get away with paying nothing on this trip

  4. Uhm, is that 13.000 pound??? EEK! how did u end up there?

let me guess: the trick u now use is buying your mother in law her own ticket instead of box her up and check her in?? :)

    just kidding, greetzz Robin

No mother in laws here  ,

No i just take about 35-40 return flights a year and when you have 30Kg of peli case full of gear you get hammered in airports, Heathrow to Johannesburg is £30 a Kilo (which i didn't know before getting to the airport) so do the maths on 33Kg of excess camera gear. It makes a bit of a dent in the profit margins :) I felt violated at the time -_- until the guy next to me had to pay nearly £5000 XS for the one trip  The tip is to use British Airways not SA airways to fly to South Africa if you have Excess baggage. - once bitten twice shy!!

  6. This is were a little research and working your Frequent Flyer levels works out for you.

I regularly fly with 3 Pelicans 1620's as Checked Baggage 30KG each ) , and when I use Qantas ( Gold F/F ) am able to get the first 55KG without any charge as well as having 2 Carry one pieces. EXS is charged at a managable $7 per kilo .

Domestically it cost me just $ 22 flat for the third case.

  7. Hi Peter,

Yeah frequent flyer miles are great, trouble is most of my flights are within europe so i never get anything like a silver card let alone gold :)
