  1. Had to take the opportunity to blow my own trumpet :uwphotog:

I had the good fortune to manage a 'Highly Commended' in the Black and White Category with this image:

The awards ceremony was a great evening (even if i did kill a few too many brain cells with the free beverages).

Met Brian Skerry for the first time, who seems like a top chap, despite making me green with envy with all his fantastic images (he had no less than four in this years results). Caught up with Tom Peschak again, alongside one of his great sardine run images. Carlos Virgili won the B&W category with a beautiful jellyfish pic.

Anyway, the exhibition is a real eye-opener, so if you're in London near the Natural History Museum (or near it when it goes on Tour), it's well worth a visit. I love the way the display the images as back-lit transparencies.

If anyone's interested, there's a bit more info on the image here:

  2. Well done Fergus that's one stunning monochrome :uwphotog::P:lol::dance:

One of my wifes friends gave me a ticket to last years exhibition at the NHM for my birthday, It's one hell of a good day out!!

Can't wait to go again and I'm looking forward to seeing your image 'backlit'

  3. Wow that is a nice shot. I would've loved to have seen the color version as well. Very nice.

  4. Congratulations on the prize and on capturing such a nice image!

I was in Mexico in June and passed up the opportunity to snorkle with the whale sharks at Holbox and I regret it ... next time ...

  5. Much Kudos Ferg thats an awesome shot... Always good to see a different perspective on such a much used but beautiful creature...

I think Miguel Lasa's shot of the backlit polar bear is absolutely wonderful and an amazing achievement on such a simple image...

Also loved Stefano Unterthiners Macaques... Is it me or does that primate look alittle like Nicholas Cage... :uwphotog:

The images just get better and better..

  9. Outstanding accomplishment.

Seeing Brian's image of the whale was entered I am glad I missed the deadline this year. A truly amazing image.

    Well done

  10. Beautiful images - I love yours in B&W, and the winning whale shot is a stunner!

    Congrats on a well-deserved honor!

  11. Congratulations on a fabulous shot!

  12. Congrats Ferg!

Saw it in the book that Noam brought to Antibes. It looks stunning. Great image.

I didn't get all the judges choices this year. Every single person seems to love the polar bear way more than the stuffed snow leopards. Skerry's whale is awesome too, Both Jordi's shots and I also like Amos's sailfish. A couple of the other underwater images were strange selections to me.

  13. I thought the fern growing in the abandoned asylum was truly inspirational... :P

Im going to enter a photo of the mould in my bathroom next year... Or maybe a macro shot of some earwax :bottled:

  15. Oh yes, I'd forgotten to mention Amos' sailfish- he had two shots in this years awards, and I particularly liked his action shot of the sailfish with a school of baitfish, one in its mouth and the dorsal raised- spectacular! :

Amos was also showing off a few of his cage-free Great White shots from Guadalupe. Inspiring, and more than a little scary.

  16. Thats a really nice shot. Congratulations.

I also prefered the polar bear. I find somehow disturbing to have an infrared barrier picture get the WPOTY as it involves a lot of work and all, but in the end there is noone pressing the button when the composition of the animal is the chosen one through the viewfinder. What would happen if someone enters a frame from a video camera? would not we think that it has a little less merit? I like to think of a wildlife photographer being involved in the moment...whatever that is.

I also liked Amos´s sailfish and, before the awards were posted, I thought the many times awarded Paul Nicklen was going to get a sailfish pic awarded (as I saw his NatGeo article). This year I missed Paul in the awards as he always has great pictures.

I also like to see both pictures from Jordi getting a prize, specially since both were taken in the Canary Islands! :)

  19. That's a really beautiful photograph.
