Green Screen

  1. Thanks for the input everyone. I'm wondering now if I may be coming at this from the wrong angle. I basically need ultimately to achieve a pure white background. Any thoughts on just dropping in a white canvas or board of some kind? Any benefits/drawbacks over a Green Screen or even just the tiled background would be appreciated. I've got time to plan and time to shoot, but very little flexibility when I'm at the location which can't be changed I'm afraid.

    Cheers, Simon

P.S. Steve, not sure about Antibes. I didn't enter anything this year, but hopefully I'll have something to submit next time around. It is generally considered the most prestigious underwater festival out there, but I agree they do show some ahem, less good stuff - after all they even show films about Pike! :)

  2. Prior to when I resigned from the San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition last Oct, the organizers had a saying "Does it pass the gag test?". We all have different tastes in films but you know one that makes you gag when you see it. There was one in Antibes last year that, for the life of me, I couldn't understand how it got in. It made me more than just gag.

  7. I haven't tried using the green screen but i would love to try it in the future when i'm used to underwater photography already. I'm still a newbie.

  8. If you are simply looking for a white background, I think it's much easier to use a white background which is readily available. I have 10'x20' vinyl background (available through Adorama that I use in my pool shoots. I have black, white and green.

I have not shot video until this last weekend's pool shoot, and I hope to post my first edited attempts later.

With regard to green screen, I tried it for the first time with stills about a month ago and it works with the ability to superimpose backgrounds etc in post. The only thing I found is that even with clear water, some diffusion of light still occurs, so that there is a tendency for the skin color balance to have a green tinge as well that needs to be corrected.

Not at home now, but I'll post a couple of examples of my first attempts later.

Just saw the date on this; I see this may all be history, hope we can get an update Simon.
