Seacam - Canon FF & 15mm travel possibility

  1. Wouldn't a dome port work for macro as well? I mean with a wideport and a few extension rings, it could be all that is needed for a trip that doesn't need over/unders, SWA/FE shots.

Paul, can you try the Wideport with a 14 to see if that's workable?

I used a standard dome port on a Hydro35 with the 55mm Micro-Nikkor years ago. The field curvature was very spacey while focusing but not noticeable in pix at reasonable apertures. The advantage of the flat port besides not having this curvature is the 1.33 magnification.

Yes, I've used a smaller Domeport with my 100 macro and found it to work well - the CA is different from that caused by a flatport, but equally correctable in ACR. I haven't tried my Wideport - basically because it has very exposed glass now that the shrouds have been shortened, - but I am sure that at 'macro apertures' it would work fine. As Tom says the angle of view changes.

The port that you refer to is somewhat different to the one that I have which are slightly stepped (with a larger glass?) and substantially shorter. Seacam builds several Domeports the basic difference between them being their length. I like to get the shortest and then use extenders whenever possible.

Scroll down in the link I gave in a previous post in this thread for more pix of DPs. The one next to the Domeport section is very short; the others are shown in the accessories for front ports section. One next to a SD shows how tiny they are. The other shows a bare DP and one with a cover. I gather yours looks like these, the step is clearly seen in the one without a cover. There are also versions of FP and SD with different shades.

  4. I used the DP60 with the 15mm Sigma Fisheye Paul - and it worked ok. I can't post any pix, because that was with a FILM housing :-)

  5. James, please define "worked ok"?

  6. The 4 inch wide DPs, however, are NOT fisheye domes. They have a relatively large radius of curvature, which SEACAM does not bother to specify. The DPs are supposed to be used with modest wide angle lenses (i.e., not super-wide).

I may be mistaken, but I was referring to the new 4" fisheye dome that I thought Seacam had at Antibes (it wasn't at DEMA). This did have a much stronger curvature for use with Fisheyes. I am not a Seacam user, so I not that familiar with their range, so I could easily be mistaken, but I am sure it was different to the 4" dome they use on all their product shots.

I can't find a picture of it anywhere. We need proper Wetpixel style coverage of Antibes!

The best I can do, at the risk of blaspheming in this Seacam thread, is to post the Subal equivalents - standard 4" dome on right, strongly curved 4" fisheye dome on left.

Its obvious from your Subal images that the lens and port cannot be aligned as per rectilinear lenses. We've seen a lot of threads on rectilinear ultrawides and port size/placement, perhaps some more experimentation and information on fisheyes and ports would be worth producing. The small domeport I have just fits the 15mm fisheye (a couple of mm airspace only) so it will be interesting to try it out.

Tom, yes, the ports shown on the link do include the port similar to the one I'm on about but Seacam have only included the DP60 recently in the lists they send me after I asked what was the shortest Domeport that they could produce (similarly with the Flatport 40.

As a resource it would be extremely useful for Wetpixel to have tables of Housings/ports/lenses - including both manufacturer's recommendations AND Wetpixeler's findings (they may well not always be the same).

  8. Drew - corners looked fine.

Paul and Alex: Nexus was one of the first to make a tiny dome for use with the 15mm fisheye. It's a beautiful small glass dome - Craig had one for his D100 housing back in the day. If Seacam makes one too that would be great!

    Merry Christmas!

If there is a new FE port as you describe I do not know about. The more strongly curved port looks to me to be on the right. It is also shorter (optical axis dimension) to accommodate a FE lens.

Stephen Frink provides tables for Seacam:

    http://www.seacamusa.com/portcombos-nikon.shtml

There is a similar table for Canon. Stephen's port extension tube recommendations may differ from those on the Seacam HQ site. As you know he has done a considerable amount of experimentation, just search this site.

Unfortunately there is no table that lists the various ports and their specs. I attempted doing this for Seacam but was unable to get the data I wanted to include (e.g., radius of curvature), even from Seacam.

I was under the impression that these Nexus ports were aimed at the DX format.

Paul, that's like 3 weeks work and we'd need the manufacturer's help with equipment AND also a nice place to do it at:) It'll be difficult to be "definitive" as corner acceptability is also subjective. Still combined with a strobe test (beam pattern, power etc) it could be worthwhile to consolidate such a list for WP members. Are you volunteering?

If only I had time. This post was intended to supply information and I guess that such posts are a good way of doing so - perhaps it would be possible to simply archive such threads in an appropriate section?

Just to clarify, I am pretty sure that the small fisheye dome was not actually made by Subal. Although quite a few of the Subal dealers in Europe stocked them. Sadly Subal seem to make less dome options these days than they used to. These are quite old now - made during the F801/F90 era for the Nikon 16mm (so for full frame - although people weren't so fussy about corners back then).
