Kindle the better travel books... all 1000 of them in one device!

  1. Amazon has increased the Kindle price on some of the best sellers and some of the new releases to $14.99 instead the past standard price of $9.99 for these same selections, then decreasing the prices sometime thereafter... :P

  2. For you iPod Touch/iPhone users Amazon released the 'Kindle for iPhone' application. Have not tried it yet :P

  3. My Kindle arrived last Friday, and I love it - the text actually looks like ink, so it is incredibly easy to read (for hours, if you should so desire - I wouldn't put it down for the first day). I have heard that it can be quite difficult to read on the iPhone for an extended period of time...but what do I know? At any rate, I believe that is the point of the iPhone application.

The only book I purchased for more than 9.99 was Martin Edge's...and I must say that pictures don't translate quite as well as text!

  4. As mentioned above. You can get software for you iPhone now to read kindek books. It's free at the Apple App store.

    Kindle for iPhone.

    ...snip...

only available on the US App Store unfortunately, or at least it's not available on the french app store :P

  6. You can't log on to the US site and download it?

  7. My wife is even happier with her iTunes now that it's playing happy with her Kindle. This is good news as now we can travel even lighter as her iTunes has a lighter footprint than her Kindle. She's now content to leave her Kindle at home and take her iTunes on upcoming vacations. I read a couple of pages of text from one of her downloaded books. It looked good, especially considering the small physical size of the iTunes, very cool...

I think you mean the iPhone or iPod Touch? I considered ebook readers to be a waste of time until I finally appreciated the E-Ink effect on the eyes after reading for a long time in daylight under shade. The LCD display with backlight is great for dark rooms but generally the crispness of the E-ink devices for longer term reading is more comfortable for me. The contrast is just better. I have 20/15 and don't have hyperopia (YET!)

    Drew,

If it is an age related focusing problem, it is likely Presbyopia (old eye) or my arms are too short to read this syndrome. As we age, the lenses in our eyes thicken somewhat like tree rings. The lens thickening makes it harder to change the focus. Hyperopia is far sightedness, which my or may not be age related.

    Bob

  10. Thanks for the correction. You'll have to excuse me. I'm not an Apple sort of person... Here's what she has, "Apple IPOD TOUCH 8-GB (2nd GEN.)."

She's been quite enamored with this latest gadget of hers... :bye:

  11. For those using the Kindle app on an iPod Touch or iPhone... how do you go about getting books on to the device?

I have an iPod Touch and use eReader (which is also very good). There are some books not available for eReader but I see Amazon has them for Kindle. Being outside the US, I'm unable to install the Kindle app using my normal iTunes account, however, I know a way around this (basically using a US iTunes card purchased online and then setting up a US iTunes account). I don't want to go through all that just to find out that I can't get the books onto my iPod because I'm not in the US.

  12. You need a US cc account with Amazon to purchase books. Sorry.

  13. Get someone to buy you Kindle Gift Certificates. That might work...

  14. Stupid Amazon.

  15. It's actually the publishers... distribution and copyrights in different countries etc.

  16. Are you sure about that?

I can buy eBooks without problems from eReader and other sources. I can also buy the hard copy books in Australia.

    For example:

    http://www.amazon.com/The-Hades-Factor-ebo...0480&sr=1-4

    http://www.ereader.com/servlet/mw?t=book&a...=4966&si=59

Same book, available for Kindle and eReader. (There are lots more like this.)

I believe it is more related to Amazon than it is to anything else. They also do strange things like that with their second hand books as well as DVDs. I have no trouble buying DVDs from Tower and other online sellers in the US.

Edit: I chose a bad example

Edit 2: While it may well be true for some books/publishers, it certainly isn't true for all of them and all Amazon would need to do is not allow the restricted books to be sold rather than stop the whole thing.

  17. You can buy books from for the Kindle/Ipod Kindle reader without a US credit card, but you have to do it a roundabout way. Directions are here.

  18. But why would you bother, especially given Drew's revelations about Amazon's practices?

I have 3 different reader applications on my iPod Touch:

    * eReader (which just takes Palm format books

    * Stanza (which takes Palm, PDF and a few others)

    * Wattpad (which uses its own format for a huge range of free books.

I can purchase books from eReader and Diesel books as well as getting free books from those two plus Wattpad.

To use the example from the Amazon incident, I can get "1984" for free on Wattpad which is legal in Australia because the copyright has already expired here.

  19. I'd still buy a e-ink reader. Don't like reading from a back-lit source, especially for a long time.
