I shot my first two 'true' black and white photos today and I thought it would be cool to see what you guys have done. I really like how it adds a sense of drama and at the same time makes it all seem unreal and abstract.
For a bit of background information, both were at open sea at an FAD at around 4m or so (I think). Gear was a Canon A630 in the standard canon housing.
Looking forward to seeing some really inspiring stuff from you all
PS: If there's already a topic on this, please direct me to it. I tried searching but couldn't find anything.
Hi Hani,
Nice images. Here's one of mine- A Whale Shark, taken in Djibouti:
Cool Whale shark!
My personal favorite so far;
Cheers,
Steve
Here's a couple I like:
This was an "accident" ... I saw a tiny little something walking on the ground and started heading closer to see what it was when the eel came cruising through ... I gave up the critter hunt and followed the eel as it swam free for a bit.
My wife loves this one:
This was desperate attempt to save a badly lit photo. I liked the image so I converted it to black and white and was pleasantly surprised that it worked.
Howdy,
Here are some recent BW's
Sorry to post so many!

Here is one of mine. A hand-tinted black and white. Not to everyone's taste I am sure.

Alex, I love the way the patterns on the Angelfish and the coral are so similar!

Two B&W from Azores, Graciosa Island, Terceirense wreck.
Only with ambient light.
Best regards,

All of these are great! Good natural light seems to be a key ingredient.

When I started as a photographer in 1966 we routinely shot in black and white. Then colour printing (repro) became cheaper and magazines had more colour pages so we started to learn how to shoot in colour. It was magic. I'll never forget the thrill of holding a beautiful 10x8 colour transparency in my hand. Of course lighting techniques were different. How magical the new black and white pictures are. Soon we'll discover the thrill of pictures that failed to come out. I'm considering underwater sketching. There's nothing new under the sun!
^ I think the "lomo" movement has already started that
Eh I think B&W is just another medium. Colour isn't necessarily superior or inferior to it (from an artistic point of view). Just different.
Here's another B&W. One of my first shot using strobes (Inon D200) with my G10. Most people seem to like the colour version but I'm in love with the B&W one for some reason. Image uncropped.

Im looking to purchase the rights to exlusively use a b & W or available light image for a website. Im only interested in large animals (sharks, rays, large turtles). Contact me if you have an image you want to sell. Photo credit will be given.
Mine; though you probably had to be there!
The turtle had just taken the sponge from the teeth of the guy in the pic. You can see the turtle is crushing it for eating.
