Fuji 200EXR

  1. I've been looking for a P&S to carry around that has decent higher ISO performance. This new Fuji P&S looks very capable from this perspective. If anyone gets one of these when they area vailable, I'd like to hear about it.

  2. Crikey - after reading that lot I am expecting to see your D700 in the classifieds any minute!

  3. He, he....not likely. But I do want something I can put in my pocket that shoots decently in low light without flash. I'd prefer something more rangefinder like, along the lines of the G10, but none of those I've looked at seem to be able to do great stuff above 400.

  4. I mentioned the F200 some time ago here.

Seems like not many use Fujifilm cameras for UW however. As for something more rangefinder like, the Panny LX3 is definitely in the same league as the F200 and will give you much better control as well true aperture control. I've played around a bit with the F100fd and it most certainly doesn't handle very well even if the IQ is great.

About the LX3, even if the zoom range is quite limited it starts wider and the f stops are 2 at the wide end and 2.8 at maximum tele, much faster than the F200 which means you can probably get away with a couple of stops lower ISO as well.

  5. Thanks for that. I missed your earlier post. I agree the LX3 seems to be more along the lines of a RF camera, I also like it's 24mm minimum focal length.

  6. Looks very good. I hope Fuji makes a housing for it.

  7. Also our illustrious leader has a little ditty on the G10 here

I'm leaning towards the LX3 for size, low light, and the widest / fastest lens - 3 important features for me.

But I'll probably wait till the Fuji is actually available and check it out first as I'm not in a rush.

Nikon appears to have dropped the ball with the P6000

  8. Have you checked out the Fujifilm forum on DPR? There's a lot of F200 threads there and also a lot of people analysing the high ISO and DR.

Check out DPR's "premium compact group test" and "enthusiast camera group test". The F100fd (predecessor to the F200) won the first and the LX3 the latter. So no matter which one you go for, you'll definitely get a great compact camera. The F200 does seem more like a P&S with very limited manual control - something to take into account.

  9. Yes, I played with one and examined the housing at PMA. It's a nice little camera; limited, but available manual control. No RAW dammit, Fuji used to be one of the few to leave that in.

The housing is nice, kind of large and they went the way of Canon with the squared off port that won't allow use of add-on lenses.

But still a great little setup.

Just back tonight, will cobble up a PMA report and some photos soon.

  10. I have seen some of the test photos that my friend has taken on his new Fuji F200 and they are fantastic for a camera of that size and cost. I was particularly impressed with the low light photos without flash. These were bright and clear and had surprisingly little grain. I think that on land this camera is pretty difficult to beat. I haven't seen any results taken in the housing but if they're as good as the other photos, then Fuji will have a real winner on their hands.

  11. How's battery life on the new F-series cameras? Is it good enough to last through 2 tanks without a change? I'm not fond of opening housings on cramped dive boats if I can avoid it.
