New Subtronic Pro 160!

  1. LOL...Jeff, that's really low! ;)

Since it uses the Heinrich Weikamp converter, it won't have 2nd curtain TTL for Canon. For Canon shooters, Seacam is the only manufacturer which has rear curtain on the strobes, so those who want it will have to pay for it. :)

Not only weight but dimensionally Z240 makes the smaller package too. I'd estimate the Z240 is about 60% of the size of the Pro 160. Not to mention price ; 3x Z240 = 2 Pro 160.

. Is 120° wide higher quality beam and 4600k worth the extra money and bulk?

    :):)

Is rear curtain sync worth 1000€? :D

    3 x Z240 = 2 x Pro 160.... = 1 x Seacam....>....2 x Seacam = 6 x Z240 :D

By the way, I received the invoice of the third time one of my Novas broke.....: 0,5 x Z240 :drink:

Only if you want sensible-looking flash-motion pics.

Well at least you got it back within a month. You must live next to the shop ;)

The Inons aren't exactly cheaper to repair as a % of price. Replacing the internal strobe unit (which is the only option if anything goes wrong with it) is about 70% of new price. Add any cracks in the plastic as well and you may as well buy a new strobe.

I do appreciate the Alu strobes. To me they are slightly more robust.

That's the great thing about competition. Look at how the big strobe makers are now trying to shrink the package. If the recycling time is really 0.1 for full power, that'd be great for high fps shooting.

  4. What do folks think about this strobe for use by itself for a high end P&S that has a max of 24mm? I could see a second one if it went down to 18mm with a dome. But it might be nice to have the wideness with just a single???

  5. Hi Paul,

German airport security didn't like strobes/torches with unremovable internal batteries - a few years ago (even in hold baggage). Same in a few other countries too. There was never an issue at major UK airports.

I don't think that they care these days (I'm going in a few weeks - maybe I'll take a Subtronic along to check) - the whole liquids and gels fiasco (which of course came from the UK) - has given them something else to focus on.

My issue with the arm-batteries - is that it means using sizeable arms (see below) - which for lighting some photos I consider a major hindrance (as you know from our dives together).

I'd quite forgotten the day the German security man shouted at me and waved a set of hexagonal wrenches in my face and insisted I take the batteries out of my Subtronics!

This strobe has no TTL mode of its own. The Inon Z240 has its own TTL mode supported by fiber optic cables. You'd do much better with the Inons than this strobe.

Was this recent or quite some time ago like Alex's case? Hard to imagine a german product not adhering to german rules. :drink:

Contrary to popular belief, the Germans are not THAT efficient!

Hello Drew, I was thinking about either manual but given that the wife would shoot as well this I would get an HK converter installed so that it would have TTL. But you are correct about the INONs being a better solution with TTL and Fiber. However, with one housing the UK-Germany there is only a sync cable option.
