Canon 5D: wideangle but not fisheye

  1. I've just got my hand on a UK-Germany housing for my old and trusty Canon 5D (mkI) as an upgrade from my previous 20D. :D

On the 20D I really enjoyed shooting with my 15mm fisheye as I loved the rounded/spherical shape of the images while not having to get too close to my subjects as in a full-frame camera. The 1.6x magnification made the lens perfect for wideangle where getting really close was not an option. I still plan on using the 15mm fisheye but for most wide-angle shooting I prefer a less etreme setup.

What lens could I use on my now-full frame camera that has about the same focal length and is not a-spherical? So, I guess I'm looking for a lens in the 20-24 range.... prime or zoom? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  2. Well first off, I encourage you to try your fisheye w/ a 1.4x Tamron, Sigma, or Tokina teleconverter. I think you'll like the results.

Otherwise, I like the 17-40L for most things as it's reasonably priced and a good zoom range. Quality is acceptable, but not superb. The sharpest most usable lenses are the 24L and the 35L

  3. Thnx, I might have a look at the 24L... I prefer a prime anyhow.

  4. Oh, I forgot to mention the 14L II - it looks awesome and Steve Frink has done some great testing and articles w/ it.

Yes, but I already have a 15mm fisheye so I'm pretty much sorted out in the xtreme wideangle section. just looking for a slightly less extreme lens...

  6. Just got myself the 20mm f2.8, really liked the quality after doing some testshots and the fact that it's aspherical doesn't really show to much (in contrast to the 16mm of a 16-35 for instance). Also, at approx. €400 not a bad price either!

Will be testing it out next week in de Caribbean! :)

  7. Hi Rutger,

just wondering if you could offer some insight on the Canon 20mm? I am considering it for WA use as well. Do you need diopters? How does the corners look?

    All the best,

    David

  8. Hi,

I had some more questions and this thread seem kinda dead, so if you see this and was thinking of posting, I also asked here:
