  1. Anyone has any experience with the Type 4 unit yet ? Whats the significant of type 4 ? What's wireless ?

  2. supposed to have an optical ttl sensor more accurate than the old one and can sync without fiberoptic cables, also improved led

Isn't there also a difference in the kind of batteries you can use?

  4. From Inon:

Compatibility of NiMH battery other than Sanyo "eneloop"

Previous Z-240 Type3/D-2000 Type3 has limited NiMH battery compatibility only with Sanyo "eneloop" (HR-3UTG) and equivalent NiMH batteries confirmed compatible by INON.

New Z-240 Type4/D-2000 Type4 can use other conventional NiMH batteries or high-capacity NiMH batteries as like S-2000.

However, INON INC. still recommends using Sanyo "eneloop" (HR-3UTG) and equivalent new generation NiMH batteries since some conventional NiMH batteries and high-capacity NiMH batteries have following characteristics and could have problem to keep their performance.

    a) High self-discharging characteristic prevents using all battery capacity

    b) High heat generating characteristic during charging/discharging could cause excessive load on batteries/devices

    c) Above a) could lead to over discharge and together with above b), could lead to sudden performance deterioration

When using "conventional" or "high capacity" NiMH batteries other than ("eneloop" type) "new generation" NiMH batteries, we recommend using good quality batteries with least problem mentioned above.

I just bought a bunch of Imedion low discharge 2100 mah AAs.

Any idea whether Inon would consider these "equivalent new generation NiMH batteries?

I have been using these batteries in my Type 3 with absolutely no problem. If you measure the discharge rates, they are a bit different than the eneloops but still should be well within the range of acceptable discharge rates for the inon strobes.

  7. I have type I and II Z240's and use NiMh batteries rated at 2650 and 2700 mah without problems. The batteries are Sony and Duracell.

Is the battery issue only with type III or IV?

  8. I have a pair of type II's and my son has a couple of type III's. We use 2500 mHh NI-MH in both. No worries but neither of us use the modelling lamps.

  9. Ok, guys

I have gotten the new Type 4 strobes. Major differences are the optical connector. It is now smaller and has taken directly from the S2000.

Interesting. Does it use the same cable/cap for the fiber, or is there now yet another new piece of gear we need to buy if we replace existing strobes with these new type 4's?

The new Type 4 strobes are compatible with old cable sets, as well as the new "L Type" connector.

  11. Hi

I would like to know a few things about the Inon Z-240 Type 4. Any information will be really appreciated.

1.- When using with the target light on and with the fiber optic cable. Is the target light turned off when the strobe fires? I ask because another brand doesn't do that.

2.- How much power the target light consumes? For example if you have the target light on for an hour, how many shots do you have with the strobe?

    Thanks,

    Andres.

  12. Just got my Type4s and used them for the first time this afternoon. I had the Z220 and Z22S up until this morning.

I can't get TTL with my Subal housing so the myriad TTL settings are still not much use. But the press button switch-on focusing/aiming light is very neat - especially with the red don't-scare-the-subject filter. I have got mine set to switch off automatically after 8 seonds. The manual says they will auto switch off when the shutter fires if you are using the TTL settings.

I don't know yet how much power they consume. I'm assuming though that a night dive with the lights on a lot of the time (but not all) would be perfectly possible.

Batteries: according to the blurb you don't need Eneloops. I used decent quality NiMHs and they seem fine.

I tried one of my Z220s as a third, in the middle strobe. Wow!! That is worth pursuing....

    Second-hand Inon Z220 anyone?

    TimG,

is the red filter only for the focus light? Does it not afect the strobe light flash?

I don't have one Inon. I have one Sea&Sea YS-110. I use a Subal housing with type Nikonos socket. Do you know if the cable (Type Sea&Sea at one end and type Nikonos, 5pins, at other end) used to conect Sea&Sea strobes is the same to Inon strobes?

I'm considering the Inon Z240 type 4 to use it both for Macro and for WA.

  14. Yep, the filter just covers the focussing light and is a clip-in fitting on the diffuser. It works really well and doesn't effect the strobe light at all. You can press the focussing light button to have it on for 8 seconds; or press and twist and it'll stay on till you switch it off.

The Inons use the 5-pin Nikonos-type cables. I icould be wrong but I thought the Sea & Seas used the same thing?

I use the Inons (two of them) for both WA and macro all the time. No problems. I've just tried using a third Inon (one of the 220s I have replaced with the 240s) in the middle on WA photos. Looks very promising.

    Hello TimG,

many thanks for the information. That´s exactly what I'm looking for. The same strobe set for both WA and Macro.

But I have another doubt about it. For WA I'll be shooting from 1m to 2m most of the time. At 1m I found the flash light of one Subtronic (4300K) to be the most pleasant source of light I've ever tried.

For Macro I'll be shooting closer. At this close distance (less than 0.5m) I found the flash light of one Ikelite DS51 (5700K) to be the most pleasant source of light I've ever tried.

Don't you need to change some setting from one Macro dive to the next WA dive?

Ok, so the Inon has one female socket 5-pin Nikonos-type where I can connect one 5-pin Nikonos-type male cable? I can´t figure out from Inon homepage what kind of cable will I need.

Here is one photo of the Sea&Sea cable to connect one YS-110 to one Subal housing. On left side it's the classic 5-pin Nikonos-type male end to connect to the Subal housing. On the right side is the Sea&Sea 5-pin Nikonos-type male end to connect to the YS-110 strobe.

Can you please post one photo of the same cable you use on the Inon?

  17. The Inon uses the S&S N5 connector. You need the N5 to S&S N5 cord.

Thanks Drew, so you confirm the cable shown on the photo will be the same for the Inon Z240?

  19. The Sea & Sea sync cable for the Inon Z240 is the 17100 (single) or the 03470 (dual) which are the 5 pin nikonos that is pictured
