  1. I managed to get into the water for the first time in ages yesterday and had the chance to test out my 110 Alphas. I was using a 5D in aquatica housing with 100mm macro lens. The viz was about 3 meters and the temperature a balmy 18-20 degrees so off with the drysuit and on with the 5mm :nea:

I would appreciate any comments that you have both positive and negative, (I have thick skin), as I haven't been in the water with a camera on a proper "camera dive" since January.

It was also the first dive in the UK in summer time so I was really pleased with the number of fish. I had not seen any of the below species before so was like a kid in a candy shop ;)

Sea lice? Not really for criticism but I thought it was interesting , sadly the fish was in a hurry so only got the one frame :(

Any way your comments would be appreciated and if any of you fancy a paddle in Swanage area, please let me know :D

  2. Hey Tristan,

Good to see you have managed to get your gear wet.

Try posting the images on photobucket and link from there.

  3. Hi Tristan!

You can still post a link to You'r Flickr page here, so we can take a peek at the photos :nea:

  5. Nice ones, Tristan.

I'd be up for a mid-week visit to Swanage - I'll be in touch during the next few days to confirm (just back from Egypt, with obviously quite a bit to catch up on).

  9. Nice collection Tristan. I always enjoy cold water shots.

  10. Good work Tristan....

The last one looks a bit like the kluzeners wrasse we get out here.

5mm...nutter still in a (knackered) 7mm and its 25deg!!! Took camera out with the breather the other day, few buoyancy issues, but my god you can get close to things.....they literally swim into you!!

    When you next out?

Yeah I know what you mean about the Klungzingers :nea: sadly viz not quite to the standard of the Red Sea. I hear that there are plenty of fish out there at the mo, an stop tempting me with the rebreather.... ;)

I was hoping to be out there at the moment, just need to book something etc but work is getting in the way again.... Have you put any shots up recently?

5mm, is no problem for about an hour, you should remember i have plenty of Bioprene to keep me warm, I still chuckle when I think of you doing the lifts on the rescue course, should have used Chris, he is a tad smaller LOL

  12. Wow! Superb shots! :nea: I'm up for getting wet at Swanage! Never dived there yet, would be interested ;)

  13. Really nice shots Tristan!

    Love the first one!

  14. You'd have blown away the portrait competition at BSoUP's splash-in at the weekend with any of those...

... (perhaps Plymouth is less conducive than Swanage?)...

... it was a struggle against the elements, and, it would seem, the diversity of opinion in a large voting audience!

Dodgy voting at the BSoUP Splash In - never!

Thanks for the comments, any time you fancy a splash at Swanage, send me a PM I am not always about but always happy to dive with other people, it makes a change from diving alone :D

    Thanks Tim,

I didn't realise that the splash in was last weekend, I was in England as well , grrrrr.

There is some good stuff under the Pier at the moment including the Tompots, Scorpion fish, 2 different types of pipe fish as well as the usual suspects, but I did a bit of spray and pray, I think I took about 100 shots over 2 dives, am going back down again to try and get a bit of practice in...

  18. I think the Tompot shot Rocks Tristan

Last time I dived under Swanage pier was a few years ago and there was an army of Spider Crabs there some of them were huge.

I know this is off topic but can any of you Hampsire / Dorset wetpixies let me know what it takes to get a licence to take a camera in at Studland bay to get shots of the Seahorses.

I've been in touch with the Seahorse Rangers and been invited to help in their tagging program but when I bought up the subject of photography they were horrified and gave me a wide berth saying I needed a licence but couldn't let me know how to get one.

  19. The licenses are issued by Natural England (http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/regulation/wildlife/contactus/default.aspx). I have emailed that asking what conditions apply. I know people that have been given them to photograph kingfishers near their nests but that it a license under Schedule 1 rather than Schedule 5. How much difference that makes anyone knows.

    Daniel

    Also available for Swanage!

  20. Thanks Daniel

    I'll give them a go.
