I used a Storm Jacket the first time out on the zodiac. Big mistake -- entire camera was wet with salt water, plus, the storm jacket trapped a nice puddle of water at the bottom, in which the camera sat for a long time.
After that, I used the soft Aquatech Sport Shield (which is a bit of a pain because it requires an eyepiece to lock the viewfinder in place). This worked much better, but I still ended up having water inside. Finally, I ended up using the Aquatech, closing up the bottom (which is where you hand goes in), and holding the camera from the outside. I shot on aperture or shutter priority with autofocus on 45 points, often, without looking in the viewfinder....
1DsII is very noisy by today's standards!
Yeah, this is a tough one. I've tried numerous rain covers over the years and the more weather tight they are the harder to operate they are. It's hard to shoot in a harried environment when you can't feel the controls. On the other hand, the kind of conditions you describe will kill just about any camera. I love my 1DMKIIn's for wet weather but I still use covers on them. And they still get wet.
Our chief photographer had some pretty good luck water proofing a couple 20D's for remote work when we first got them. He's out of town right now but I'll see if one is laying around the office. He used some thick heat shrink material over all of the controls. Sealed them up nice but you can still feel the controls. That wouldn't help around the battery or CF compartments. Maybe some marine tape over the top of those combined with the rain covers?
Thanks for the info.
Yep I saw Eric in numerous episodes usually in the background. On the bridge and in the general seating area is where I noticed him. Sorry I cannot recall which episodes but it definitely was the early episodes. Sorry Eric I did not keep the recording of them. ; )
Cheers
Todd
I am baffled as to why people keep apologizing to me for not seeing me or not keeping the episodes. I was there, and also have all the episodes, so I know where I was, and when. I think we may have different criteria for when an apology is required or recommended!
I believe the difference is the sense of humor in interpreting what facetious comments are. And I knew you'd count the number of times you'd be in a scene... screen ho' !
Damn, I actually agree with Drew on this Strangely enough.
I was extending what I thought was funny posts in that people felt bad they did not notice you.
AKA I agree with you also Eric. Sorry for not being clear on that. Ooops there I go again. See now that was trying to be funny again. LOL I know bad attempt. Sorry. Damn there I go again. ; )
i'm not sorry.... damn hippie!

I believe that is the first apology Mobius Strip I have ever seen.

That's ok Todd. It had to happen because you can't be wrong every time.
Xaria, quick access to controls is probably the biggest reason. And while we're talking about screen time for Eric, this wasn't his debut, was it? Didn't he appear on some other TV show before?

Other TV shows: The Tonight Show (Jay Leno) -- just a few seconds. That's probably it for stuff that has aired! (and I'm perfectly content to stay in the background; otherwise, I would have just allowed myself to be come injured, and I would have been an instant character on the show).
For the record, I didn't count the number of times I am in the shot. I only used "20" because it is >> a few...
Yeah, I suppose my sense of humor excludes all this "sorry" stuff. SORRY, but it just isn't funny to me!
I should've given you a book of ancient chinese poems, idioms and proverbs (translated) and an ErHu. Then the TV crew could've gone to you for that ancient wisdom "sifu" thing. You play the cello so the Erhu is a walk in the park, while reciting some lament poem about death.
Or is that too arthouse for reality TV?

I have an Er Hu! That would have been awesome. Except that I can't grow a beard of any kind, not to mention a long, white one.
We got make up artists for that. If Mark Wahlberg can get a big ding dong for Boogie Nights, we can give you facial hair. Anyhow, you out on the deck and your full mask on, playing the Er Hu while big waves crash, intercut with hunted whales. I'd pitch it to Animal Planet but we have to work on your accent.

When I mentioned that with a little PR and a good manager that Eric would be a star, well I think you have clearly shown you are the person for the job.
The visual you have provided is truly outstanding
Alternatively, we could have Eric quoting Sun Tzu, which is more application for Whale Wars. Afterall, being an US series, Sun Tzu Ping Fa is probably the most well known Chinese literary work in the US, thanks to Reaganomics and Harvard Biz School.

Go Rin No Sho - Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi. Not Chinese, but very popular in the '80's.

I have one line in an international snap-in (short, also).
I'm in the first 4 episodes or so -- in at least 20 shots per episode. I'm in the background a LOT, but there are only a few scenes with my face in them. Of course, it's easier to spot me if you know me well...
El Guapo himself giving the Captain the evil eye... or trying to get the attention of a female crew...

Pak, nothing else to do eh?
Just watched the first 4 episodes of the second series of Whale Wars. I cant say I would have too much trust in that boat and first mate. Certainly not the way they try and ram it through the ice. Scary stuff. I thought Eric was on the boat for that trip, although I havent seen him on screen yet. Perhaps he was down below cleaning out the toilets whilst the film was being shot.
