GF1 Housing Options?

  1. I doubt it it a dome at all. Probably flat port.

The problem with the oly lenses on the gf1, is that they double, or worse, the focus lag time, from .2 to .4 seconds.

Guess an entry level slr is still the way to go.

Until another lens is out in the 1 year old micro four thirds market...

OK, let me rephrase that. The Oly 7-14 for 4/3s and the Pany 7-14 for Micro4/3s have the same close focusing distance (0.25M). They are not the same lens. The Pany lens is designed for the new mount and the focusing of the G1, GH1, & GF1 has been reviewed as fast. I see no reason this lens can not be used in a w/a dome port. I was just wondering how the Oly users set up their 7-14 in the Oly or another band of w/a dome.

  2. Oly sells a flat port for the 7-14, but I believe Athena makes a much nicer semi-dome port for it as well.

I've been emailing 10bar with everyone's questions, but haven't had any response. I am sending in a large order for a couple of LX3s and a bunch of other parts, so I suppose they will get more interested when they see my money... ;-) I'll post any other info I can find out.

From what I can see, the GF-1 housing isn't quite out yet.

For now email/PM me if you are serious about the housing, and I'll let you know when they are shipping.

    Thanks,

    Jack

    Jack,

Thanks for the reply. What about the Olympus PPO-E04 Evolt Underwater Lens Port (8mm, 7-14mm, 9-18mm)? I don't shoot Oly, so may be I sould not be injecting what ifs in these posts.

I am considering the GF-1 for land use next year and may be underwater in 4th Q 2010 or in 2011. Please do not count me as a potential for you first order.

Whoops, yes that's the port. I rarely sell the 7-14. That's a glass optical dome port, actually made by Athena, from what I understand.

  5. The Austrian underwater photography shop unterwasserkamera.at lists the 10bar housing for GF1 for 790 EUR, available from mid/end December. Their web page says the housing weights 1100 g, has interchangeable lens port, and is rated to 60 m.

They also announce the Athena OM P1 housing which is apparently compatible with Athena exchangeable port system. No price is given yet.

Hmm, 60 meters; not exactly 10 bars, but deep enough for me. At 790 Euros + shipping from Europe, I think you would be better off buying from Jack.

  7. I saw the Athena OPM1 flyer and the price was going to be an astounding 150,000Y or about $1685 by today's exchange rate. But he was reconsidering that after I said it wouldn't sell... ;-) Looks like a very nice, compact aluminum housing.

This is going to be a continuing issue with the micro four thirds cameras. Aquatica offers an aluminum housing for the D90 at $1600, and people think that's a great price for a housing with interchangeable ports. Athena offers an aluminum housing for the E-P1 at $1685, and people think that's a ridiculous price for a housing with interchangeable ports.
