Olympus does TTL and wideangle!

10 posts
  1. I decided to do a translation of Olympus' Japan website on the Olympus 5060 and from what I can understand there is some VERY exciting news..

One.. The PT-020 will be a new housing released for the Olympus 5060 camera. Supposedly to be released at the same time as the camera. No new news there - Olympus always does that. Way to go Olympus!

Two.. And more exciting (for some).. The PFL-01 housing will house Olympus' FL-20 strobe. Can you say.. TTL? Don't worry Sea & Sea.. I will still love my YS90's.

Three.. There is mention of an optional wide angel port PPO-02 which will allow the use of Olympus' wideangle lens attached to the camera.

Of course, this is all based on the poor translation done by Babelfish and I don't want to be spreading rumors but... Olympus might just be paying attention to us poor underwater digital photographers after all.

    Here's the translated information:

    "Waterproof protector

Waterproof protector " PT-020 " (desired retail price: If 28,000 Yen, November last third sale schedule) you use, feeling at rest even with the outdoor scene, and the business scene and the like with the outside it can do photographing. It is the protector of active real specification even with diving which actualizes the pressure-resistant depth of water 40m. As for this protector with Olympus first system protector, portion of protector the wide port " PPO-02 " for PT-020 of selling separately (desired retail price: 16,000 Yen, November last third sale schedule) by the fact that you exchange, real underwater wide photographing becomes possible when private conversion lens adapter " CLA-7 " and wide conversion lens " WCON-0C7c " are installed in the camera. In addition, flash " FL-20 " outside exclusive use (desired retail price: 15,000 Yen) waterproof protector " PFL-01 " of business (desired retail price: If 28,000 Yen, November last third sale schedule) you use, TTL automatic photographing at underwater becomes possible."

  2. Too cool Laz!

Let me hotlink the photos in (I'm sure Oly won't mind):

    Housing:

    nr031007pt020j.jpg

    Flash Housing:

    nr031007pt020j_02.jpg

    Wide Angle Port:

    nr031007pt020j_03.jpg

The flat front of the wideangle port is a bit worrisome, but hopefully that's not what the actualy production port will look like.

    Great find Laz!!!

    Cheers

  3. Interesting -- thanks for the link, guys. So, what's up with the flash housing? will the PT-020 get a bulkhead, or is it all via optical sync?

  4. According to the translated web site it mentions on both housings an aluminum TTL connector cap. From looking at the photos there appears to be a pair of bulkheads on the camera & strobe housings. The flash housing specs also mention "TTL cable not included" so it's "ALMOST" safe to assume the addition of a bulkhead on the housings.

Damn.. I'm gonna really miss setting my strobes on slave! :D

Anyone have an Olympus to Nikonos to Sea & Sea TTL Y-cable?? :)

Of interest is also the mention of a stainless steel buckle on both housings.. Cool! You get a cool cowboy belt buckle with the purchase of the housing. What will they think of next?!?!

  5. It looks to me like the bulkheads are shown on the right side (in the photo) of the top of the camera housing and the right side of the flash housing. They have red caps on them.

A picture is worth a thousand words!

    Cheers

    James

  6. Damn.. I'm gonna really miss setting my strobes on slave! :D

And I'm going to miss setting off your strobes while I shoot. :)

  7. Damn.. I'm gonna really miss setting my strobes on slave!  :D

And I'm going to miss setting off your strobes while I shoot. :)

Darn.. Few things are as fun as watching a digital photographer just about pull his hair out from getting constant over-exposed photos without realizing that my slave strobes are firing simultaneously while I hover above him. How are us 'slave-strobers' supposed to have any fun now?

You know.. now that I think of it.. There's never been any mention in the underwater photographers etiquette book about 'slave strobers' pointing their strobes in a different direction when someone else is shooting. Hmmm...

  8. Here's the Oly press release, they will be showing their new housings and accessories at DEMA:

From October 8-11, Olympus, a leader in digital photography, will have a number of new underwater housings on display at the DEMA show (booth #2091).

The latest housings were introduced today -- see the press release below.

Don't miss this opportunity to see these and other housings for Olympus cameras up close and personal. If you're interested in a detailed one-on-one briefing at the booth, then RSVP to this email.

    See you at the show!

NEW OLYMPUS UNDERWATER HOUSINGS FOR POINT & SHOOT AND ULTRA ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERAS ENABLE MAXIMUM

"DEPTH PERCEPTION" Heavy-Duty Construction Enables Cameras To Reach Depths of Up to 130 Feet, LCD Hood Cuts Down Glare for Viewing and Shooting Images

Melville, New York, October 3, 2003 - Olympus America today introduced two new heavy-duty housings to support underwater digital imaging enthusiasts. These stylish and durable transparent polycarbonate housings are for anyone looking to pursue underwater digital photography when diving, snorkeling or surfing - and they're also ideal for use during activities that call for ultimate protection from the elements such as skiing, fishing, sailing, or even in certain industrial situations.

The Olympus PT-017 Underwater Housing is designed for use with the Olympus D-560 Zoom or D-565 Zoom digital cameras, and the PT-018 Underwater Housing is designed for use with the Olympus C-740 Ultra Zoom or C-750 Ultra Zoom digital cameras. "When we created underwater housings for our Stylus Digital line, C-50 and C-5050 digitals earlier this year, we were just beginning to break into the underwater photography market," said Jason Bortzfield, product manager for digital products, Olympus America, Inc. "With the introduction of underwater housings for our Ultra Zoom line and point-and-shoot D-series, we've introduced the housings into our other digital camera lines and established the fact that Olympus is serious about expanding this market." With an impressive depth limit of 130 feet, the housings allow digital photographers to chronicle snorkeling and diving expeditions with a wide range of Olympus digital cameras. The PT-018 housing can be used with either the C-740 or C-750 Ultra Zoom. The sleek, compact C-740 Ultra Zoom is a 10X Optical Zoom, 3.2 megapixel digital camera that's ideal for the budget-conscious family photographer. The C-750 Ultra Zoom is a 4.0 megapixel all-in-one camera solution for advanced photographers who want the widest focal length range plus manual and automatic controls in a rugged and portable metal body digital.

The PT-017 Underwater Housing allows underwater photographers to take their point-and-shoot D-560 Zoom (3.2 megapixels) or D-565 Zoom (4 megapixels) below the surface with the same ease of use they know and love on land. Moreover, because both cameras have 1.8-inch LCDs, the viewing area for composing and reviewing shots is bright and easy to read under the waves. Stylish Both the PT-017 and PT-018 underwater housings are made of durable transparent polycarbonate with grips and levers fashioned out of distinctive red-colored polycarbonate. The transparent nature of the housings ensures that users can view their shots with ease, as well as show off the stylish bodies of their cameras.

    Innovative

The housings feature fluorite (FL) glass lens windows for greater clarity when shooting photos underwater. To reduce glare caused by sunlight on a digital camera LCD, the housings feature an LCD hood located on the outside back of the housing that makes viewing the LCD easier above and below water.

    Intelligent

Olympus has thought of everything to keep digital cameras safe and dry within the housings. O-ring seals, special rubber rings engineered to fit perfectly within corresponding grooves, expand under water pressure to tighten the seal when the shells of the housings are locked. To keep the O-ring in optimal condition, the included O-ring pic removes the ring without damaging the housing or the O-ring itself. Then, silicone grease, also included, can be applied to keep the O-ring properly lubricated and maintain its condition. Furthermore, safety locks on all of the housings prevent accidental opening. Approachable The housings' stainless steel nickel-plated brass mechanical control buttons, also sealed with silicon O-rings, allow full access to the cameras' functions and menus. With the touch of levers, zoom and shutter are easily operated. For crystal clear shots, the integrated flash diffuser panel cuts down on glare from particles suspended in the water that otherwise would create a haze in the image.

    Exciting

For the first time ever, Olympus has created an underwater housing for its Ultra Zoom digital line. Going 130 feet below the surface of the water to shoot digital photos is quite an accomplishment. But using the powerful 10X Optical Zoom lens of the C-740 or C-750 Ultra Zoom means that underwater photography enthusiasts will be able to go even deeper - capturing all of the undersea action that can be photographed within the zoom range of the camera.
